Tommy Haas and Marat Safin played a nostalgic exhibition match on Sunday to celebrate the start of the 100th tournament at the Hamburger Rothenbaum.

They started off by entering a Mercedes-Benz vintage car to be brought to a villa of presenting sponsor E.ON Hanse.

The players were dressed up in ‘classic’ tennis clothes that was worn at the first tournament in 1892 and played a vintage match on grass with wooden racquets.

Safin said: "To dress up this way is great, it’s a fantastic opportunity. I’m glad to be here and to share this moment with Tommy. The atmosphere here is really nice."

Haas said: "I’m grateful to be part of this in the city I was born in. This was a one in a lifetime opportunity. To wear dresses that were worn hundred years ago and to play with wooden racquets was great."

"I’m happy that we have had this great tournament for 100 years and hopefully for many years to come. I’m very proud to be part of it."
