The FireFit Challenge held its regionals in town this weekend. It a chance to find Canada's "top" firefighter. They run an obstacle course, individually and in relay, in full gear including hauling equipment up 3 stories of stairs, hauling 18lbs bodies to safety, and firing a water hose at a target. Not something you could pay me to do in full firefighting gear in 28C weather (today was cooler, but raining which = more falling down). Watching these guys was really impressive. Obviously the paid firemen did better than the volunteer ones since they have more time to practice and work out. Most volunteer firefighters have day jobs too.
Today before starting the events off they had a nice ceremony honouring the first responders for 9/11. It was very simple with the firefighters marching in in full colours and regalia (if they had them), a couple readings and speeches and a ringing of a bell. The bell is apparently rung three times three when a firefighter loses his life on duty. Overall it was a touching ceremony and very appropriate for the day. Despite the rain, I was glad I went.
