Random Thoughts and Happenings.

Janice Joplin once remarked, in a live concert album I used to own,
"Why sleep? I might miss a party;"

And as a follow up.:

"I never hit the streets till noon."

Though awake at the moment, I can have both today, sleep and a party.
Waking up early to have breakfast with my friend who gets off the night shift just before eight.
She's taking me out for my birthday at the end of her night shift.
Then, my reader and I are going out for my complementary dessert from Beaner's.
I have the rest of the day free for shopping, if I'm in the mood, and for a nap, if I'm in the mood.
My sleep cycle is off again, because Wednesday night I was on emergency call again for Sac, and even though I have never been called out during the night so far, to intervene in a sexual assault hospital emergency, I know it can and does happen, and my mind and body won't let me sleep on those nights on which I have shifts.
Staying awake doesn't give me any advantage, so I think it's psychological, and something I'm wanting to overcome, this insomnia when I'm on call.
No luck so far. Consequently, I lose the next day, making up for lost sleep.
As I did yesterday. So, tonight was a short night as a result of having slept much of yesterday.
It's worse when I have no time to catch up on sleep, and must be fully functional on the days after my overnights on call.

A quote from Stilgar, to Duncan Idaho, in Children of Dune, comes to mind.:

"To stay awake all night is to add a day to your life."

Just the opposite seems true in my case.
Being up all night is slightly reminiscent of when I used to spend my nights drinking, so long ago now.
Without the hang-over, of course, nowadays, because I no longer drink.
But the fatigue and sleep deprivation feels like a kind of flashback.
Thank God that's no longer my lifestyle!

Two days from now, I will have been sober for 27 years. On March twelfth.

Tonight I'm having birthday dinner with friends and getting together afterward to play a music trivia game, which will be a fun way to celebrate.
I can sleep a few more hours to add to the time I've already slept.
As long as I don't get absorbed in an audio book.
I love to fall asleep reading.
