Utada Hikaru in NYC

Mar 25, 2009 21:42

I was excited to hear that Utada Hikaru was coming to New York, going to be at Sephora at 5th Ave. Its like, "Omg! Thats like, right over there! I could just take the train from school and be there in 15 to 30 mins (this is the way MTA runs...). I'll finally be able to see her in person and finally see a famous person!" Yes, this excitement for a whole 2 weeks.

So the day finally comes. I go to my 3 classes and go "mini-shopping" with my girls. Then i hit the subway up to Sephora. I get there, and there is a looonng line to get into the store. It really wasn't much, but it was a lot to me. (I didnt really think she would have so many fans here in NYC, or that so many people would come to see her, but i guess im wrong.)

Anyway, I stand in line and the line actually starts moving. Im getting excited, preparing my camera and some paper for her to sign (this is my first time to one of these things, i dont know what i should do. lol!). Then, the line stops and it turns into a mob. Sephora has closed their doors and have started playing Utada's new songs. Then someone starts speaking, then Utada. All the while, a few 50 or so people (could be less) are inside, standing, looking at Utada as she speaks to them (she was on an upper level). They all got a small poster signed by her, some got either a small make-up bag that says "Utada" or a really thin case (I'm guessing a lip gloss/lipstick  holder? I'm not too familiar with all these makeup products, and most likely some pictures (not with her, but of her at the store).

How did these people get to go in? Apparently, these folk are the ones with no lives! No work, no school, and like to get up early. Rumors were flying that some got there at 9am, others say at 2pm. These were the few that got a yellow wristband and were let into the store. Why? I hate it when these people do this. Why start the event at 6 if people are willing to come in at 9? Don't let people keep standing on a line with no hope. At least give away a few things to the poor souls who actually have lives, who got there a few minutes before the thing started, and who are left standing in the cold to show their support for this great Japanese Pop Artist. (Is she pop? I'm not sure about this type of stuff either...lol!)

She never came to the window to wave at the lonely, poor souls that were still waiting outside for her. This 'event' was from 6-8pm. she left around 7.15-7.30ish. I wasn't able to see her when she was in store, i wasn't able to see her when she was leaving. A few of the fellow lonely souls, helped me take some pictures (since they were either taller than me or closer to the window). I got some pictures-- out of 9, there are only 2 really, really blurry ones of her ( i think its her anyway...-__-).

Then, after she left, there was still a mob that wanted to go in the store. I'm guessing they thought that they were actually gonna give us something. At first they started passing out a few of those mini-posters (that weren't even signed! Why Utada, why??). Then, they stopped and started letting a few people in at a time. Once in the store, they would tell you: "Buy something and get a Utada poster." WTF?? They're using Utada and our lonely, poor souls  to gain profit! I know that this is business and all, but still. Where's the human aspect they expect us to learn at school? The fucking posters weren't even signed!!

My friend bought something. I persisted the cashier with my birthday gift. (They give you a free gift when its your bday if you sign up for some free membership card. My birthday was March 11, so today was the last day to get it.) I told her about the poster, which she finally gave even though she said "you didn't buy anything, thats why i wasn't going to give it to you" (thats what she said, or thats what i heard/remembered. haha). I know it wasn't signed, but i wanted something else other than a horrible day.

I must say, this horrible event won't stop me from trying an event like this again. I might just become a hypocrite and arrive super early to one of these things. This is the second thing that disappointed me. (The first was not being able to get free tickets to Bon Jovi's free concert in central park last summer. T_T I'm hoping theres going to be another one this summer. *crosses fingers*

till next time...(which will probably be after my Cost Accounting Exam. wish me luck!)
