The Stray One

Her paws were twitching slightly;
Amber eyes closed, locked far away.
Nightmarish images flashing painfully;
She lay upside down on patches of leaves.

In her mind's eye she was still a carefree pup;
Romping playfully with her brothers in the pack.
Everything was new and mysterious to her still;
So she stopped to sniff a fern next to a tall dark tree.

She examined a small hole near the base of its wide trunk;
Ignored the warning yip her mother gave, she dove in.
Suddenly pain coursed throughout her tiny body;
Her paw bleeding, she howled news of her capture.

Alone and desperate, she struggled to ease her fear;
She had to find a way to escape, or else face death.
She squeezes her eyes shut tight, pulling and yelps;
Exhausted, the stray one awakens from her dream;
And once again presses on, down the lonely forest path.
