I have become excited by language learning again. The bub and I are doing baby-sign classes, the ones where you learn British Sign Language, and I have been amazed by the fact that it's not just a nice hour out now and then with babies, but good brain stretching learning. I had forgotten how much fun it is. I want to learn MORE. MORE I TELL YOU!
I can sign any number of children's songs (useful, I know), as well as some day to day basics. The other super exciting thing (also slightly odd) is that Gwen has been making the sign for milk when she's hungry. I am extremely surprised, but also very gratified. I would love to do more studying, so I can actually hold a sign conversation, as opposed to the basics I know. It's an odd way to learn a language, because I'm aware that there's an entirely different grammar, but the baby-sign class just teaches words, not word order, or grammar.
It makes me realise that I have an unnatural love of grammatical constructions. I want to get a feel for how the language flows. I'm not sure that watching the sign-zone on telly will help me much, but I'll give it a go. I do now know the signs for the
Hairy Bikers though, after all, what better thing to watch on signed telly, but lovely hairy cooks? (PS, do you think it would be acceptable to ask them to drip butter on my baby, as some sort of blessing that life might be full of good things? That or a combination of butter and engine oil)
Do any of you sign? Have you used it?
