Elizabeth: The Golden Age

As the title suggests, went to see Elizabeth today.  have to say that I thought it was very well done.  Nice flow, excellent cast, I love the fact that they had Cate Blanchett (Who I think is a very talented actress) reprise her role as Elizabeth I in this.  Not sure how historically accurate it is, I'd have to read up on Elizabeth Tudor to know that, but I thought the whole thing was very well done.  Granted, it being Hollywood and all, I'm sure there's a fair share of myth woven with fact.

A little slow at the start, but you get the chance to see not only the presence of a queen dedicated to her people, but also the very human side of the woman with is the queen, with all those little quirks and follies.  There are also the many facets of the court itself with the intrigue and pageantry.   Geoffry Rush & Clive Owen were lovely in the parts of Walsingham & Raleigh.

Hell the costumes alone were worth watching...I can't even imagine what they had to do to make them, but they were beautiful.   Granted, I don't have a Tudor persona, but dayumn!

The scene where Elizabeth put on armor and rode out to rally her troops really had me thinking of Joan of Arc, and yes I'm sure that something that's been said in all the reviews...but it is so very true...a shining figure astride a white horse framed by the heavy grey sky behind her.

I don't think, though, that Mary was as treacherous a schemer as Karpur has portrayed her as in this.  I do have to admit though, the scene where Mary is told of the assassination attempt on Elizabeth and her arrest was very well done, as was the scene with Mary's execution.

All in all I thought it very satisfying, I really enjoyed watching this film.  Personally I think Cate & Clive deserve oscars for their roles in this, but that's just me.

There is one scene that had me a bit confused though...the scene with Elizabeth in a tub of water with Bess sitting next to the tub, from what I could tell she was completly clothed (Including a small ruffled collar)  now...was that actually her taking a bath?  Was it some other wierd beauty thing that women put themselves through back then?  I mean I'd like to assume it was a bath but hell, women used to smear lead paste on their faces to make their skin paler...but did they really have issues with actually getting undressed to take a bath back then?

Then again...how often did people bathe at the time...

Anyway...
