Father's Day 2013

Fathers day has always been a strange day for me. I never had a father since mine drove out of my life when I was seven. I can still remember standing on the curb, Mickey Mouse guitar in hand (my Christmas present from him) waving and saying "I'll see you next Sunday" watching until the last dot of tail light disappeared into that Christmas Eve night.... Somehow I always thought he would come back....child like faith?
Well, he never did return and his presence was replaced by my child molesting step father....then I married men who I always seemed to try coaching into being the father I saw other people having and wanted for my own children. With varying levels of disappointment I lived for years wondering if good fathers were just a myth....then I watched my own sons and son in laws embrace fatherhood. Those young men have restored my faith in the office of fatherhood. I feel blessed beyond words to know my grandchildren are receiving a good start in life.
And, in all fairness, as we grow older, Scott keeps trying to do better, and I can see him love his grandchildren, and even strive to be a better father. So on this,my 65th Father's Day I celebrate fatherhood. Better late than never....
