I can't stand when people overuse the word "like."
When "like" becomes too frequently used, every other word, or just in places it's not needed, I honestly can't pay attention to the speaker anymore. It fills in any gap in their speaking, or substitutes any generalization they make, in addition to when the word needs to be legitimately used. It's just too much! How many times can some people say "like" in just one explanation, or even worse- one SENTENCE? How do they not notice they're doing it? How do they not realize (here comes my rudeness) how dumb they sound because they 'like' can't form 'like' developed sentences?
I unfortunately have this problem most often in my education courses. It sucks because if these people can't figure out how to organize their sentences clearly, how will they be equipped to be teachers? In fact, the trait may even rub off on the students, and only create more of this annoying habit.
I feel as though the people who do this have a disadvantage. It shows their inability to clarify their ideas and thoughts coherently, and if the listener is like me, they'll be driven nuts.
A person doesn't have to sound like a 'valley-girl,' where every sentence ends in a question, just to seem unintelligent. Just by using "like" a million-too-many times does this on its own. Can you imagine quoting these people? How would they sound written down? Well the first reaction would obviously be the ability to SEE how many "like"s are in what they say, but it's the second reaction that is more detrimental. After being able to see how many "like"s were quoted, one could easily relate the speaker to the "valley-girl" stereotype, and suddenly the quote becomes unintelligent and immature.
When I was younger, I started picking up the overuse of "like" and my mom took the incentive to stop my sentences whenever she heard it. It absolutely drove me insane. I couldn't speak to her without her interrupting me. But it stopped my habit. I feel if the people who 'like' have this problem could 'like' find people to 'like' point out that they say the word "like" WAY TOO MANY TIMES when they're speaking, they could 'like' maybe 'like' fix their problem and 'like' seem more intelligent when they speak. I know the intelligence is there, but if the speaker can't portray their thoughts clearly or solidly, not many people will listen or trust what they 'like' have to say.
