A plea for tomorrow's European elections

May 21, 2014 21:58

Tomorrow, for the first time in my 10 years in the UK, I will be able to vote.

Speaking as someone for whom that right was hard-earned and is extremely precious, I ask that if you have the ability to do so, please, please vote tomorrow. It was not so long ago that many of us were not allowed to vote. It's a power we must utilise. For those of us who find it difficult to engage publicly with politics (I count myself among these), it's our only power in that sphere. As hard as we might try to keep our heads down and ignore politics, its influence shapes our lives. I have been powerless to affect the UK's politics since I moved here, though the changes in government during my stay (and in particular those related to immigration policy) have certainly had an effect on my life.

I am delighted and grateful to have that power now, and I will use it. I hope you will too, if you can.
