Day 84/183: Friday’s Unscientific Poll: The Great British Sewing Bee 2020, Semi-final

Jun 12, 2020 21:36

Now we’re down to the last four contestants, it’s time to re-run the Great British Sewing Bee poll! I’m also attempting to get over the fact that we’ve dedicated two evenings in a row to staring at light fightings trying to work out the best arrangement for the kitchen and outdoors, and I’ve just dropped over £200 on the ones we selected. I may ( Read more... )

Light fittings intimidate me. On the one hand, I don't feel like I particularly care? I've lived with all types of light fittings in my life and only one kind have I ever said "ugh, I dislike this one immensely and would not ever buy one like it" (The "hollywood" style bathroom fixture with a row of naked round bulbs - I have this in my master bath)

But even so - it doesn't annoy me enough to rip it out and replace it - because the thought of picking something BETTER - feels very hard. If it just comes with the house - sure, fine, whatever. But if I went out and *selected* it - now suddenly it takes on *meaning* and *importance* - because I have to CHOOSE.

Also I have zero idea of how much lights cost - so I would be lost as to whether the one I liked was a good price or a ridiculous price :D

The only reason I typically notice about light fittings is whether or not a room is too dark. Also I moved around loads when I was a child, so getting attached to anything material in my surroundings was pointless.

It does feel very hard making these decisions, mostly because we don't get much practise doing it, and actually they have long-term consequences. It's not like you want go and buy a bathroom mirror with integral lighting every year. The pricing of a lot of interior decoration is also confusing because if you ask "what is a typical price" the answer seems to be, "how long is a piece of string".

whether or not a room is too dark

Ooh yes - that reminds me of when I first moved to the US and my friend and I rented an apartment. The first night we were in our new place, we realized there was not a single overhead light in the main living area. We mentioned it the next day at work - "when it gets dark, we have to go into our bedrooms if we want light" - and the next day one of our coworkers brought in a lamp that he had in his garage and gave it to us :D

When I bought my house, I was introduced to a number of purchase decisions for which I had no reference - buying a washer and dryer, and a fridge - those were hard enough, but I had enough experience with using them that at least I knew what features I wanted/needed.

But buying *carpet* - that was crazy!

It's fantastic. It's the Miss Marple to Bake Off's Hercule Poirot.

Personally I can't stand seeing the bulb. It's a retinal burn thing, I prefer diffuse light.

So glad Terese left, don't know why but I felt she was fake.

I'm not a fan of naked bulbs. I do like bright rooms, though, so those LED spotlight bars where you can angle them into the corners of the room are a good compromise.

Honestly I'd be happy with any winner at this point. I think Nicole and Clare deserve it most, while I like Matt and Liz best. So anyone's good now!

I don't particularly want any of them to go at this point, so I suspect I may get a little sniffly during next week's show!
