First the Macbook Air resulted in a lot of slim-down thin notebooks, then the iPad made all these PC makers scramble to put out touch-enabled stuff and made Microsoft cough up a touch-based Windows 8. (Not to mention before that, the iPhone made a lot of other phones look like iPhones)
Apple isn't just a market leader, it's a market disruptor. It doesn't matter whether people love Apple, hate it, or is indifferent towards it; What's happening is happening. Not only does Apple have had no need to tell these other companies to follow, but those companies couldn't scramble fast enough to do it.
