More Cooking

Got to spend a little time in the kitchen this morning... folded/sorted some of the pending laundry, put shirts on hangers, hauled a box full of bottles to the recycling bins, and poked around in the boxes on the back patio.

Didn't actually DEAL with much of it - brought a couple of things inside & put them away, brought in the countertop deep fryer only to discover that it doesn't fit on or in any of the shelves I currently have. Dug through the box full of fabric & put it all in plastic bags - although its all still outside, in a cardboard box, on the ground.

Did poach some salmon, steam the corn from this weekend's produce box... realized I had 2 of the major ingredients for salmon chowder in hand.

I've only got 2 weeks of my farmer's glorious produce left! This makes me sad. For all that I wasn't able to keep up, it was an exceptional $400 to spend. I'm defitely doing it again next year, although I think i'll try to split it with my brother. or somebody.

Which also brings my attention to a few other things.

Its fall. The light is decreasing. The storms & rain are coming soon. I need to actually LIGHT my home - lamps, some UVB bulbs strategically placed, that sort of thing. I also need to go through & patch all the holes in the drywall, left from the plumbing repair & the heater install last fall... and INSTALL THE WOOD STOVE. All of which requires me to empty the living room. I think i'll leave the carpet in place, at least for this winter... one thing at a time. But I need to work on making the house snug & warm, & possibly cheaper to heat, using that wood stove & scavenged pallets.

I've been yeilding to the biological imperative to gather food, i've got a box of squashes i'll begin eating soon, i've got a drawer full of carrots & beets & potatoes that all came from my farmer. I've got 7 whole chickens I got on sale last week in the freezer, and there's a turkey in the bottom of that same freezer... which I think i'll roast on one of those first freezing nights in October.

Plus, the cow is coming in November. Which brings its own dilemma - I need to clear space for it, as this year i opted to sign up for a full quarter, which is probably enough to completely fill my chest freezer. Which is currently full of Turkey & Chickens. Time to eat down the freezer, i think...

primal diet, wood stove, winter squash, house, west valley beef
