Do you remember when high-definition television was launched? In case you're wondering, currently all of the programs on free-to-air television in Australia are broadcast via analog signals; with a few programs also simultaneously available in HD format. HD is digital and the plan is to cease analog broadcast in 2008, meaning if you haven't bought either a digital TV adaptor or a TV with built-in digital reception by then, you'll be watching a black screen.
And 2008 is when the Olympics is on, amongst other things. I can imagine the television industry comtemplating broadcasting the Olypmics in HD format only, to force viewers to convert to HD-TV.
I don't have a HD enabled TV and frankly I can't be bothered. Given that less than one-quarter of Australia's population has taken up HD-TV I wonder what will happen in 2008; if the Government sticks to its plan. Anyone want to bet that the 2008 deadline will be pushed back?
