This is so damn interesting, and i love your turn of phrase - reminds me very much of C.J. Cherryh and her fantasy stuff. The interal monologue Spike has is engaging and intriguing.
Really must catch up on the rest - i need more time!! :)
Thanks. From a precise wordsmith like you, I consider any comparison to Carol Cherry (DAW published her first book about the same time as they did mine, so I assume she's roughly my contemporary) satisfactory indeed. Moreover, I also like her fantasy, in particular.
Read at your own pace, as long as you're enjoying. And anyplace you're not, I trust you'll tell me. Valuing discerning, responsive readers as I do, I actively encourage that!
Oooh. You made me grin all goofily. *bounce* I think there are only two of Ms. Cherryh's books that i didn't enjoy. The rest i devour as quickly as possible and then go back to the start.
I feel kinda-sort unable to bitch too much since i haven't read everything, but i haven't had the *need* to bitch yet, either, so...
Ms. Cherryh was born in 1942. :)
And, ummm. You must point me to your published works, as i now have the overwhelming desire to read them. Please please.
Well, I was right: I was born in 1942, too. (That sounds HORRIBLE aloud!)
Don't worry about my profic--it's all out of print, and two of the books were published only in Holland, in Dutch. The name I wrote under, then, was Ansen Dibell. You're welcome to hunt used copies, if you want--they do turn up, now and again.
I'll be pleased, though, if you continue to like this tale, if you'd drop back and read some of the others in this series (and tell me what you think of them, if you care to). The first is Old Blood, and you can find it at http://www.allaboutspike.com. The others are there, as well.
Absolutely wonderful! I'd need the talent you display here to comment effectively and coherently, but I think this is my favorite section yet of a new work I have been loving from the start. The imagery, the characters, the interaction, the depth . . . just plain amazing, but of the fantastic kind that one simply enjoys rather than analyzing. What a gift!
Thanks! If I've done it right, it's because I've laid enough, and proper, groundwork, so the developments now and hereafter can happen with very little (or no) explanation, flowing simply and clearly without bogging the story down in explanations (much). At least that's what I try to do....
I take it that Spike means that sex things are the "one exception" to Bit's quickness? I, also wondered about what was going to happen to her and Mike. I confess now that I now see Dawn hiding her virgin eyes from Spike's nakedness in the earlier story is now in character. If she's immature or undeveloped in her awareness of sex, it's quite consistent. Spike seems to be fearful that Dawn may be lacking, which, he also seems to think, would be a shame for her (and Mike). Especially as he and Buffy have so much together
( ... )
I don't know that Spike's worried about Dawn's missing out--she's told him she has decided to remain just as she is, indefinitely, and he loves her just as she is. With the arrival of sexual awareness, she's bound to be drawn away, since their love is companionate, not erotic. But her unawakened state puzzles him, uber sexual being that he is. He's not certain if Dawn's really aware of not having chosen it. He thinks it may have been imposed upon her, or it may be a side-effect of her keyness--neither of which makes it a thing Dawn has had any choice about.
On the principle that you don't miss what you've never had, Dawn is complete as she is. She's not, after all, precisely human and there's no need for her to conform to human developmental patterns, especially when she intends never to age, as Spike does not. But since it is, to Spike, the lone and conspicuous blind spot in Dawn's otherwise acute and accurate discernment, it troubles him and he doesn't know what to make of it, how he should think about it...as a freedom or as a
Oz's deference and Spike's appreciation of it very neatly displayed. Good, clear explanation on the magic sink. Spike's "issues" are all on show, concern over dominance being uppermost maybe? Hopefully having a settled position in regard to Oz could help him keep steady? (Begs the question what will happen when Angel comes on the scene, checked back where you replied in chp 3 comments that he will appear, "but not for some time.") Found Spike's ruminations on Dawn's nature interesting and his awareness of the dangers of slipping off acute. He surely is an unsual vampire :) "Best to shut it away, try to forget.
