I had to figure out a way to break the news to David that we were getting our Slayer back, but we were geting her back with a burden, or a bonus, depending on how he chose to look at it. I ran the arguments through my head a dozen times, trying to put he most positive face on it that I could. Yes, we would be saddled with another prospective Watcher, but one who had a least spent time in the field, already. Hell, she'd been on site during the shattering of the Sunnydale hellmouth, something none of us could claim. She was also a surprisingly naive, overenthused teen-aged girl -- who happened to be the sister of that man's Slayer.

Then there was Ethan... I suggested having the girls over for tea to break the good news - or the bad news - to them to keep him occupied. Oh, he was already occupied, planning our post-whatever celebration... a black-and-white ball, which would be a touch macabre, but elegant. Ethan had conceded the point that I could invite a number of demons I owed, but only so long as they could sustain human standards of manners.

I couldn't believe I was nervous when I stood, motionless, in front of David's door. Somehow, I didn't believe I could reduce this to a memorandum. It felt like an eternity before I knocked, and another before I received any sort of answer.
