I name all sorts of spots on our land so I can talk about them with others and they will know where I'm talking about. Let's see...
1. Bus parking spot...lane that enters beyond the big tree at the top of the hill
2. Lilac Cove... a group of lilacs that grow under said big tree. Hammock in there.
3. Cedar Cove...an opening in a group of cedars beside the lilacs in the berm between us and the gravel road.
4. Heaven's Dawn...our property
5. The Lane...obvious
. The Well Pipe...the well beside the lane
6. The Berm...between the perennials and the road
7. The Perennial Slope...perennials between the house and the Berm along the road
8. Hairy Woodpecker Hillside...the hillside between The Perennial Slope and the stream
9. The Centurian Tree...huge maple tree on Hairy Woodpecker Hillside
10. The Old Well...old cement dug well at base of Hairy Woodpecker Hillside
11. The Fiddleheads...expanse of ostrich ferns harvestable in spring at the base of Hairy Woodpecker Hillside.
12. Tree Swallow Birdhouse...birdhouse beside the Old Well
13. Sumac Hill...hill covered with tall sumacs (hammocks, too). Hill made from diggings of the Old Well.
14. Willem's Apple tree...wild apple tree I protected 18 years ago
15. The Pond Lane...lane made of diggings from Fiddlehead pond
16. The Alders...expanse of alder bushes between the Pond Lane and the stream
17. The Culvert...culverts under the road at the stream
18. Streamwalk Chairathon...series of chairs placed every fifty feet along the stream from the culvert to the bridge at the highway.
19. The Stream Woods...the woods between the stream and the highway
20. Veery Way...entrance to the property where the firetrucks turn around and where we park when the road is too icy to drive. Veerys, a lovely bird with a circular song which sings the last song before dark.
Those are the names along the gravel road from the highway up to the top of the hill. Along the fence from the Bus Parking Spot and in the yard are as follows.
21. Ghost Sheep Line...the metal reindeer filled with fleece that balance on the fence posts between our yard and the sheep field.
22. The Sledding Hill...the slope near the Ghost Sheep Line where the fastest sledding is possible
23. The zipline...aircraft cable between the telephone pole and a cedar tree 200 feet away across the valley.
24. The Valley...the 14' deep ravine beside the house and greenhouse.
25. The spring waterfall...the water that rushes down the valley from the Ghost Sheep Line, through Dead Man's Run to Fiddlehead Pond.
26. The Terraces...terraced garden beds on both sides of the Valley.
27. The Rocks...a pile of rocks on the other side of the Valley beside the Ghost Sheep Line where Abe used to play with a hammer as a child.
28. The Bluebird Houses...bird houses on the fence posts.
29. Trillium Corner...a dense cluster of trilliums that bloom in early May at the end of the fence.
. The Campfire Spot...a campfire spot at the corner of the fortress.
30. The Way and Beyond...the maple forest at the edge of our property, which extends for five miles over the hills.
31. The fortress...a fort like enclosed garden
32. The cedar rail fence...fence at the edge of the property beside the Way and Beyond
33. The Asparagus Patch...ancient asparagus clumps on the other side of the fortress.
34. The Plateau Tipi...tipi Abe and his friends have had campfires in since he was six.
35. The Turkey Shed...shed where we once kept turkeys, but which is now storage. Behind the Plateau Tipi at the Way and Beyond cedar rail fence.
Now, from the berm heading to the valley and down it:
36. Wildflower Hillside...the hill in the yard.
37. The upside down tree...a tree stump Ben helped me bring to the yard and plant upside down in a hole.
38. The thyme pathway...a path down the hill made of thyme
39. The Top of the Hill...a swath I flattened so we could put chairs on for overlooking the whole shebang.
40. Everfar Labyrinth...a thyme covered circular area at the base of Wildflower hill where nothing grows except thyme because it is so hot and sandy. The labyrinth is made of thyme or snowshoed rings in the winter.
41. The Chicken Shed garden...where we burned a chicken shed between the lane and Everfar Labyrinth
42. The Grapes...grapes heading up onto the Christmas lighted pergola overhead
43. The Teapot Pergola...the other side of the pergola nearer the house
44. The Coccoon Chair...hanging basket chair under the pergola.
45. The bee balm...mass of flowers between the pergola and the greenhouse
46. The greenhouse...alder basket covered with plastic and fabric used to store stuff
47. The veranda...a roofed area at the end of the greenhouse
48. The board pile...pile of useful boards beside the greenhouse on the top of The Terraces
49. The Septic...tank between the veranda and the house along the fence at the top of the slope into the valley.
50. The porch...a 10'X 25'cedar deck.
51. The Clothesline Trail...the clothesline from the porch to the plateau tipi across the valley
52. The clothespin trail...along the edge of the porch where clothespins fall off.
53. The Heat Trap Corner...the area beside the sunroom and the woodshed where it's warm in the winter
54. The woodshed...a leanto against the house where we store the wood and through which we enter the house.
55. The Crystal Palace...a tipi in the lane that used to be covered with 63 windows but which is now open to the air or closed by a tarp depending on the weather.
56. The Hothouse garden...a bed of garden inside the Crystal Palace around the edge
57. The Compost Pile...alongside the house beneath the bathroom window where all food scraps go and where the raccoons come to feast.
58. The Varigated Japanese Willow...huge bush beside the compost pile
59. The Teacup Trail...posts around garden beds in the Perennial Slope garden to keep the hose from crushing flowers. The posts are topped with teacups
60. The Corner Cedar...big cedar at the corner of the house
61. The Tree Bench...bench surrounding the Corner Cedar
62. Corner cedar hammocks...three hammocks under the Corner Cedars and the birch trees beside it.
63. Nancy's Spa or The Spa...bathtub area beside Corner cedar. The tub gets filled with hot water from a tap on the side of the house.
64. Maple Cove...maple saplings outside the house beside Corner Cedar. A hammock or two are in there.
65. The porch swing...metal swing we bought for $35 when Abe was born 21 years ago. It is tied to
66. The Elm tree...shades Maple cove and Deer Café Hilltop.
67. The Chute...path straight down the steep hill dividing Hairy Woodpecker Hillside from Sunrise Hillside.
68. Sunrise Hillside...where the sun rises and the deer climb to Deer Café Hilltop. ends at The Fiddlehead Patch by Fiddlehead Pond.
69. The Terrarium...hillside beside Sunrise Hillside, the side of the valley where it is dangerously steep.
70. Dead Man's Run...the dangerously steep bottom of the valley between the Valley and Fiddlehead Patch.
. The tree Fort...built in some trees at the top end of Dead Man's Run
71. Cedar Hillside... the other side of Dead man's run.
72. Deer Meadow...an open ridge top at the top of Cedar Hillside. It extends to the end of the zipline at the Plateau Tipi.
73. Rope swing hillside...the other side of Deer meadow where a rope swing hangs from a sturdy Hop Hornbeam (Ironwood) tree.
74. The cabin...frame of a studio I began building 18 years ago.
75. The Porcupine Tree...a hemlock beside the studio which the porcupines have removed the bark and branch tips from.
76. The Stump Benches...four long basketlike benches made of stumps in soil surrounded by alder weaving. One is near the Well Pipe. Another is at the end of the lane beside the Crystal Palace. Another is along the end of the lane across from the crystal palace. Another is in the veranda against the wall of the greenhouse.
77. Nancy's Office. The end of Deer Meadow just beside the zipline tree.
78. Heavenly Dew Provincial Park...the woods beside the turkey shed.
79. Three Birches Hillside...side of Deer Meadow hill down to Fiddlehead Pond
Okay, that's enough for now. I think that takes care of everything around the house and along the road down to the highway. There are many many more including all of the flat land and the 3 ponds and streams. I'll cover them later.
