We always went to my grandparents' up in NY state, Pulvers Corners, to Tall Trees. They had a Pine Plains address.
It was a two day drive with us three kids in the back seat. We had the baby bed mattress in the back of the station wagon, the old Pontiac.
We'd take turns getting to go in the Way Back ...where we could lie down and stretch out, read and sleep, watch the telephone wires and poles go by and the clouds.
At thanksgiving dinner, we had some name labels and placemats that must have come in a kit. I set them up on the big fancy dining room table for my Grandmother. The labels were on little paper supports with our names on them. There were napkin rings and cloth napkins. Always white. There was a paper turkey in the kit and paper placemats.
My grandfather stood at the end of the table, all the 12 plates in a stack on his plate. He'd carve the turkey and pass it around. We 6 cousins ate at the card table.
One year, Heather and I went out to the apple tree and gathered apples and made an apple pie in the kitchen 'nook' by the window and the stove by the swinging door to the lovely dining room.
Grandma had a big black cookie jar bear on the opposite counter. We weren't allowed to go outside to play until the shadow of the house had receded. It took a long time to go from the little fish pond and the rock garden back to the house.
We'd go out and play in Basswood. Heather and I played together all the time.
