I had two gum grafts performed on Monday. A gum graft is a minor periodontal procedure in which gum tissue is transferred from the roof of your mouth to cover the exposed roots of some of your teeth. My dentist had been warning me for some time that I would need gum grafts. It's genetic. I've flossed twice a day since I was sixteen. But lo, the day came, and on Monday I had both my lower incisors done.
Well. After hearing from several people that a gum graft is no big deal, that it's only a little sore for a day or so, that I won't need to worry about it, I thought, "oh, Daddy must have been a big baby about his. He said it would hurt a LOT!"
Daddy was right.
Monday, I was full of Percocet. Tuesday and Wednesday, I felt much better, and started taking ibuprofin instead. Four ibuprofin every four or five hours. Thursday, I thought I was going to crawl under the table at my staff meeting because my mouth was so sore. Last night, meeting some friends at a bar, I ended up ordering glasses full of ice and just holding them on my face. I went home and went back to my Percocet and went to bed.
And two hours later, drugged and woozy, I WOKE UP because my mouth hurt so much.
This morning, I went back to my dentist's office, and was told that I'm fine. Everything is healing properly. They gave me a topical anesthetic with the warning, "Don't use it too often," and suggested, "Try not to take the Percocet. Try taking maybe four Advil every four to six hours." Oh, and it always hurts most three to four days after the surgery. They had not mentioned that part before.
And then I came home and discovered that my health insurance doesn't actually exist in Massachusetts. I've been here a year, and I've been trying to TELL them I've been here for a year, and they never quite got it... until today, when they both got it and told me that they have to terminate my coverage because they don't work in Massachusetts. So. For the past two hours or so, I've been on the phone with representatives of various health insurance companies, trying to figure out the cheapest way to get health insurance (because it's illegal NOT to have health insurance in Massachusetts).
Except that my mouth hurts so much, I've been crying while I'm on the phone with them. I don't know if this is helping my chances or hurting them.
I just want to smack something, I'm so frustrated.
I have to write a paper today!
