Summary: Ethan has a confession to make.

Reid paused before knocking on the door of Hot Mom, his boyfriend’s mother. He just knew that this was going to be one more dinner where Lily Walsh attempted to look gracious while secretly comparing Reid unfavorably to Luke’s ex-boyfriend, Douche McDoucherton. But family was important to Luke, so Reid was just going to have to put up with occasionally socializing with Luke’s ridiculous relatives. Well, not all of them were ridiculous. Reid didn’t mind Luke’s younger siblings. And Lucinda was quite the dame. But Luke’s parents were annoying. They belonged on one of those ‘reality’ shows where the characters created unnecessary drama in order to draw attention to themselves and to feel important. How Luke managed to turn out normal-ish with those two fruitcakes as parents, he’d never understand.

Reid fortified himself by taking a deep breath. He knocked on the door-of-doom. Lily ‘Sleeves? What are these sleeves you speak of?’ Walsh opened the door. When she realized it was Reid, her face slid into a grimace and then directly into a practiced smile.

“How lovely to see you,” murmured Lily as she ushered Reid into the house. “Luke just phoned to say he’s on his way and the kids are upstairs. Would you like a drink?”

“Thank you but no,” responded Reid. Reid and Lily sat. Silence ensued.

Reid cleared his throat. “Your Christmas decorations look . . . festive.”

“Thank you,” replied Lily. “It’s my understanding from Luke that you’re not a fan of Christmas.”

Reid shrugged. “I like Christmas cookies.”

Suddenly Luke’s younger brother, Ethan, ran into the room. He planted himself in front of Reid but was looking at his own feet instead of at Reid.

“I’m so sorry,” whispered Ethan. “I didn’t mean to.”

“Um, okay?” asked Reid in confusion.

“I ruined everything,” confessed a teary-eyed Ethan.

Reid felt an odd little tug in his chest. He was really uncomfortable seeing the tyke upset. “I’m sure whatever you did was an accident. Um, do you want to tell me about it?”

“Luke hid your Christmas present in his old room so that you wouldn’t peek,” said Ethan who was attempting to be brave by looking Reid directly in the face.

“Like I’m some dirty present-peeker!” huffed Reid exaggeratedly. He was relieved to see Ethan smile slightly.

“I just wanted to show Eliza how cool it was,” claimed Ethan. “But now I broke me.”

“You’re broken?” asked Reid. “Aren’t you a little young to be having an existential crisis?”

“Oh!” exclaimed Lily who was rubbing Ethan’s back. “Luke had a chess set made for you. The different pieces were fashioned after people you know. Ethan must be referring to the chess piece that resembles him.”

“I’m the black knight,” said Ethan with pride. “I’m riding a black stallion and carrying a long stabbing thing so I can protect the kingdom. I look really cool. Well I did until I broke myself in half.”

“That sounds awesome,” said Reid. “No wonder you wanted to play with it. Is there a piece that looks like me.”

Ethan nodded excitedly. “You’re the black king. Luke says that you boss people around like you’re a king so it’s perfect for you.”

Reid smirked. “Is your brother my queen?”

“He’s a boy,” lectured Ethan. “So he has to be your royal consort not a queen.”

Reid nodded. “This sounds like an amazing present. Why don’t we see if we can glue you together?”

“You’re not mad at me?” asked Ethan shyly.

“Naw,” said Reid. “You and me are buds.”

“We are?” exclaimed Ethan happily while bouncing on his feet.

“Yeah,” said Reid. He stood. “Now where does your mom keep the good glue?”

Ethan took Reid’s hand and led him to Luke’s old bedroom. Reid glued the black knight back together.

While waiting for Ethan’s chess piece to dry, Ethan and Reid sat on the floor of the bedroom playing with the various other pieces. Reid was voicing the king who was haranguing one of the his rooks, Katie Snyder, about marrying the stupidest pawn, Chris Hughes. No good ever came from a rook marrying a pawn. Ethan was voicing one of the Reid’s bishops, Lucinda Walsh, who was trying to takeover Reid’s kingdom.

Reid looked up and noticed a frowning Luke standing in the door.

Luke huffed, “I knew you’d be a present peeker.”
