Summary: Reid is furious with Katie

Reid was sitting at his desk when he heard a disturbance in the outer office. He could hear the soothing tones of his administrative assistant and the yelping of his best . . .of Katie Snyder.

Reid walked out of his office and saw that Lowell had twisted Katie’s arm around her back and was frog-marching her out. Reid was saddened by the fact that he was unmoved by Katie’s tears.

“You did not wish to be disturbed,” Lowell explained to Reid. “But Ms. Snyder was not taking no for an answer. If she does not leave of her own free will, I am going to have to decide between having her arrested for trespassing or using my stun gun on her.”

“Thank you for taking your responsibilities so seriously, Lowell,” said Reid. “But I’m willing to see her.”

Lowell released Katie’s arm and brushed invisible lint off of his own sleeve before sitting at his desk.

Reid led Katie into his office. When she moved to sit down, he said, “Don’t bother sitting. You won’t be here that long.”

Katie sniffled.

“I called the publishers this morning to try to stop the book from being published but they told me it was too late!” cried Katie.

Reid sneered. “You’ve known for weeks that Luke felt betrayed by your writing this book. But you’ve only decided today that Luke’s friendship was more important to you than profiting by selling him out?”

“He’s the hero of the book, Reid!” defended Katie. “Everyone who reads the book will know how amazing Luke is. They’ll see that he’s a generous philanthropist--- ”

“Luke loves you,” spat Reid. “The Snyders consider you family and you betrayed their trust by writing an expose on Luke. How can you justify baring Luke’s personal life to the world?”

“I knew it would be a good story and that he’d be a great role model for kids,” justified Katie. “He’s overcome so--”

Reid sighed sadly. “The fact that you didn’t talk to him about this ‘great opportunity’ to be a role model proves that you knew how much pain it would cause Luke to have strangers read about his personal dramas. And that you didn’t care. How did you imagine that you’d be able to remain the anonymous author of ‘Mr. Snyder: The Scandalous Life of an Heir to the Walsh and Grimaldi Fortunes’? It was one thing to pressure Nancy Hughes to claim to be the author of ‘Oakdale Confidential’ when you wrote that trashy piece of gossip and innuendo but---”

“Luke’s life has been so full of drama and wealth, that it’s a surefire best-seller,” sobbed Katie. “When my old publisher asked me if I was interested in writing another book, I knew that I could give Jacob financial security by writing about Luke.”

“The fact that you’re still trying to justify what you’ve done is appalling,” Reid informed Katie. “I can’t be around you for awhile.”

“I’m your best friend, Reid,” said Katie while wiping her nose with her sleeve. “You can’t just write me out of your life.”

“You hurt Luke,” said Reid. Nothing else needed to be said.

“I swear that I’ll make it up to him,” vowed Katie. When Reid just stared at her impassively, she ran from the room.

Reid rubbed a hand over his face. He’d always known that no good would come from making friends.
