Summary: What happens after Luke and Reid have a kind of crappy date
Luke lay on his bed thinking about his less-than-stellar date with Reid earlier that night. Neither one of them had been at their best. He had foolishly brought up Noah and Reid had been kind of a dick when Luke had invited Reid to come inside. Come inside. Ha! The invitation had been for sex and they both knew it. And Reid had said no. That had hurt.
Maybe Reid had reconsidered wanting to be with Luke at all. It’s not like Luke was some prize or something. A spoiled drunk with one ill-gotten functioning kidney. Reid was brilliant and funny and adult. He could have someone way better than Luke. Someone who hadn’t made so many messed-up mistakes in his life.
Luke wondered what he was supposed to do. He knew that he had made a mistake mentioning Noah. Luke didn’t think it was wrong that he still cared about Noah. He didn’t feel the need to downplay what their relationship meant to him. But it hadn’t been that long ago that Luke had told Reid that he was choosing Noah over him. Yeah, he had done so because he felt guilty about wanting someone other than Noah. But it had still hurt Reid. It wasn’t surprising that Reid wasn’t going to cheer and throw confetti at the mention of Noah’s name. [And Luke should probably do a better job at explaining the situation to Alison so that she understood that it wasn’t like Reid had forbade Luke from caring about Noah].
Luke hadn’t minded that Reid had been called in to consult on a patient. Luke was so proud of what Reid did that there wasn’t room for Luke to feel jealous of his work. But Luke wondered if the reason why Reid had emotionally checked out on the date was indicative of something seriously wrong with their relationship. And he wasn’t crazy about the way Reid had turned down his invitation. It had sounded like Reid was trying to ‘pay him back’ or something. Should Luke be looking at tonight as some sort of omen of things to come or should he just put it down to some dates are kind of crappy?
God, he liked Reid so much. He wanted them to be together. He wanted to bicker with Reid and to have sex with Reid and to work with Reid on making the neurowing the best in the country. He didn’t want to fail with this relationship like he had failed with his relationship with Noah.
Luke’s cell phone rang. He looked at the clock. It was nearly midnight. Luke picked up the phone and noticed that it was Reid calling. If the phone call wasn’t Reid breaking up with him, Luke would really have to select a cool ring tone for Reid so that Luke would always know when it was him calling.
"Hi," greeted Luke.
"Hey," said Reid. "I’ve been thinking that I was kind of a jackass."
"Tonight specifically or is that a blanket statement?" teased Luke.
"Funny," said Reid.
"Well, I was kind of a jerk to be so careless about mentioning Noah to you," admitted Luke. "Just because I want Noah and me to be friends doesn’t mean I need to bring him up in conversation to you. I’ll try not to do that again."
"I . . . apologize for my behavior tonight," said Reid.
"I’m sorry for bringing up my ex-boyfriend while on a date with you," said Luke.
"While I’m not a member of the Angry Barista Fan Club, I probably wouldn’t have been so annoyed at the mere mention of his stupid name if I hadn’t been annoyed with . . . a work situation," confessed Reid. "I let my frustration with work affect my date with you and I regret that."
"So, you’re not reconsidering us?" asked Luke.
"Hell no! I turn your offer of guilt sex down and you think I’m reconsidering this thing we have?" asked Reid.
"It wasn’t guilt sex," sniffed Luke. "I was so happy for you about how well the meeting with the union reps went and I just wanted to be with you."
"Dammit!"
"But maybe it’s good that you put the brakes on," continued Luke. "We probably should take this slow."
"Dammit!"
"I know that most people don’t treat sex as a big deal, but it’s always been a big deal to me," admitted Luke.
"Sex with you is a big deal to me," said Reid.
"Really?" asked Luke.
"Yeah, you big goof," said Reid. "Just to give you little bit of incentive, I should let you know that I am amazing at sex."
"Really?" asked a delighted Luke. "Are you as good at sex as you are at chess?"
"Absolutely," boasted Reid. "Please tell me that you’re better at sex than you are at chess."
Luke laughed. "I have no idea if I’m any good at sex. I’m not exactly the most experienced guy around."
"Well, I’m sure that I can give you some pointers," said Reid.
"Thanks! I’d appreciate that," answered Luke.
"Okay, I’m gonna hang up so that I can get some sleep. Do you want to meet for coffee tomorrow?" asked Reid.
"Yes."
"Java’s at two?"
"That’s great. Maybe you can tell me more about how exactly you’re amazing at sex," suggested Luke.
"I’ll bring a chart that graphs my sexual prowess in various categories."
