"Let's make this easy," said Sarah Jane. "My computer has already scanned you. You're human, but you've traveled through time. I warn you, if you're here to cause trouble, I'll stop you."
The woman smiled wryly. "No trouble. I promise. There's an artifact that fell through time. My friends and I are here to retrieve it. Then we'll go."
"That's not reassuring. You have no idea how many invaders and thieves have used that exact same line."
"I can guess."
They watched each other. Sarah Jane always prided herself on being a good judge of character.
Eventually, they settled in over a cup of tea and danced around talk of the future. Sarah Jane remembered worlds, stars, time unraveling. Beverly's life was spent linearly but for a few times, her path rigid and military but also open and exploring.
"My son," Sarah Jane said, when Beverly commented on the picture of Luke. "He's at university. He's brilliant."
"Is he?"
Sarah Jane nodded. She missed him on days like these, even if he was merely a phone call or Skype chat away. "Now he's off doing something far beyond me. It feels like I only had him here for a few minutes."
"It always feels like we only have them for a few minutes."
"And then?" She could hear the tick of the clock. She spent a long time alone and with Luke out of the house, it was looking like she was going to spend far more the same way.
"Then we watch them try to fly on their own, and we hope we gave them enough to get there without us." Beverly's face was set in a quiet, distant smile. "And then we remember that we're not dead, and we go have amazing times, too."
Sarah Jane met her smile, and their teacups clinked together.
