How goes it in Nansylvania?

Sep 13, 2006 10:18

Well, the weather out here in the capital city of Nansylvania, nestled in the rolling hills of Waldmanistan is still a bit cloudy, but we're expecting that to move on through and there should be a break in the weather near the end of the week.

That sucks about the JMU thing. They didn't provide you with a tech contact for just such issues? Do NOT do nothing and fret. Call whomever your contact and bitch. That's what our students would do. ;)

As far as the job, well, I wouldn't go so far as to say that "everyone hates their job." Work is definitely work, but it doesn't have to be that bad. Like marvin789: he quit his job in construction the other day over problems with his mean boss and the fact that one of his employees is a drunk and a liability. My comment was, "surely you can get the same job somewhere else with a nice boss who doesn't hire drunks--is that too much to ask?"

Good luck, baby. You deserve it--because you're awesome!

Oooh, Centra. It is the suck. Usually their web calibration stuff does the trick but I think it's still a pain. Can you at least get podcasts or tapes of the classes?

I'm in the sucky job boat as well and utterly depressed that finding the museum job of my dreams would mean living at the poverty line. *sigh*

No podcasts available. If they didn't have a microphone for Centra, they wouldn't have a microphone for recording the podcasts. Besides, this one planning class I'm taking is a workshop kind of class, so not being able to hear discussions is really a hindrance to me.

Tell me how I can list that I have some college education and a ton of experience without saying either "Non-Degreed" or lying and saying I have a degree.

that, I believe, is my biggest hurdle.

Hmmm - well I'll try that out. Right now mine just says "JMU: 1991-1995, Non-Degreed". I think that's been getting me circular filed before I leave HR. I'll see what I can do to fill in the blank.

I should also add that I know plenty of full-time musicians. Most are on the Celtic/Ren Faire circuit. They don't make much but they make a living. The key is in addition to having a regular band is to have gig work on the side. If you are a back-up singer or play an instrument, playing with other bands for their gigs or recordings helps fill in the gaps between your gigs. Making records now is a lot easier thanks to home studios and the Internet. Most of the people I know self-produce their albums. They sell enough to break even on their production and to get enough to make the next album. There's plenty of work out there if you are willing to network like crazy and do a bunch of different things.
