As many know, I love food in general. But I REALLY love food traditions, and especially food that one is "supposed" to eat at a particular time. I love Chinese New Year largely because of all the food that people traditionally eat to celebrate - steamed whole fish, long-life noodles, bamboo shoots. In college I discovered apples and honey, matzo, and round challah. I don't know what it is. I'm just really attracted to food that has ritual and tradition behind it, I guess. I guess most food has tradition behind it but somehow the ritual element really gets me. I like having a reason to be eating a particular food. Even if I have absolutely no connection to that tradition whatsoever (obviously. Since I am of course not Jewish).
I'm also not Catholic. BUT! That hasn't stopped me from buying a king cake today! It's Fat Tuesday! The beginning of Lent! Traditional cake with a baby in it!
Yum! Neither E. nor I got the baby, which isn't too surprising since there's only 2 of us and there's only so much cake I am willing to eat. I'm keeping the faith for tomorrow though.
