Floor is done. Grouting wasn’t as bad as my sister in law made it sound, but I was only doing a bathroom and she a kitchen. The annoying parts were the hard to reach corners between the vanity and tub and under the front of vanity where it was hard to get the grout float at the prescribed 45 angle. Read up before I started, and they advised to have your wash water ready before you start grouting and boy were they right. After 5 minutes that stuff started to get hard. Felt like I was burnishing the tile with high grit sandpaper which was okay because some paint had dripped onto the tile and it helped clean it up. But that old bathmat that I rolled up and used as a knee roll has been invaluable to me and my poor knees. I’ve ruined a pair of jeans with thin set and grout and paint, but they were worn to useless anyway so it was no loss.
I painted the walls this weekend too. They must have just sprayed on the varnish on the cabinetry after installation so it took three coats of paint to cover the walls, though to be fair the walls were raw under the paper. I got some interior moisture blocking paint that I really liked. I wanted Kilz because I had used that on my snake viv’s and I liked how it does block moisture pretty well but there wasn’t anything smaller than 5 gallons that I could find….I defiantly didn’t need 5 gallons, barely needed one. But the one I got worked okay. In taking down the last of the wallpaper I used the piranha dissolvent and I had to score the walls. I had hoped that the paint would cover it, and it did cover the worst, but I ended up having to sand down portions touch up the paint.
Rollers people, rollers are your friend. They come in a number of sizes and widths and unless you are doing crazy tight corners they are very effective tools. My mother has a love affair with brushes, but brushes do not love her back. I painted above the mirror, the soffits and all the high places and most of the larger walls. She had the area around the toilet. She had one job. There were paint spatters all over, paint splatters happen, tis the nature of paint. But if their few and far between I don’t mind getting down on my knees and humming ‘Cinder-ellie’ while I scrub the floors. I was down there anyway for the grout. But mom is a mess. There was paint all over the woodwork and the tile. I was irritated, but she was trying to help so I kept my mouth shut. But there were globs of paint splatter from her flailing the brush around until I forcibly took it from her and gave her a roller. Now there are people who are really good with a brush, when I was repainting my church for my gold award there was a gentleman who helped me and he used a brush. Never dripped paint, worked quick and neatly. But he was a professional painter and over 70 years old. My mother is not this man. And though she aspires to emulate his talent and experience she’s just not quite there yet. I just figure that we’re going to have to repaint the whole house when we leave anyway and the carpet is a lost cause so she can brush her little heart out after I tape up all the woodwork and windows.
The taping on the woodwork is still up, I’m scared to take it off. I’m going to wait until the countertop is on before I take it all off so I can do one last round of touchups, even though the area around the toilet is very done.
Tomorrow the new counter/sink comes in and gets installed. Hopefully no problems…there probably will be but I can hope right? At that point the bathroom will essentially be done…
….well, except it needs a toilet.
