A Season Too Early
It was a season too early
That's when you came
Striding in with the Spring
Picking flowers before they've bloomed
Fragile blossoms still breaking under the rain
Yielding to water but not to fate
You left before the sweat of summer
Much too early to see the dawn
Only the fading twilight
The silent, silver moon above
Whispering such tragic things
As trodden gifts and love
Because
It was a season too early
That’s when you came
A season too early
To hear my call
And now you’re back but darling,
Now it's much too late
The trees are weeping as we
Are covered in the soot of dusk
Black and red, shadows and leaves
And oh, how I’ve had to wait
For this very Fall
It’s been too long
Why did it have to be
A season too early
For you to come
A season too late
For your return
I can’t tell you the answers
With the same wintry words
Nor turn you away
When you’ve never grown cold
You came too early
You came too late
The seasons are ended
Our season is gone.
