Okay, it' s been a month, I can post again.
I've picked up FFXI again, and, despite my previous shit-slinging, it is a really, really fun game. However, it has to be played with friends, which is what's different about this time around. I readily admit I was wrong about the game, friends make all the difference in the world. So does my job choice.
The first two times around, I played a Warrior. You wear heavy armor, you wield big-ass axes, and, almost always, you tank. I hate tanking. I'm good at it, I have timing down, etc., but I fucking hate doing it. I'm sure it has something to do with having everything rest on my shoulders when tanking. If I fuck up, the party could wipe on an otherwise normal mob. Given that I play the game for fun, I'm not exactly ready and willing to take on the extra stress. Additionally, I was extremely retarded when I played the games, and was terrible with money. I would keep switching between wanting to level WAR or my subjob, MNK, but I didn't have the money to have a set of armor for both, so I'd keep auctioning off my current set and buying a new set. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I spent so much time doing nothing that the game felt like an empty, boring sack of shit to me. The first time outside of beta, I made it to level 30 before quitting. Second time, I didn't even make it to 20.
Right now, I sit in Kazham, waiting for a party, level 27 MNK with powerful, high quality equipment and several spare sets for different situations and my subjob, should I feel like leveling it. As opposed to having a full set of throwaway crappy armor with no bonuses, I have armor and accessories whose bonuses accumulate to +10 STR, +3 DEX, +1 VIT, +1 AGI, -6 MND (don't mind this one, ahuhuhuh), +8 Fire Resistance, +6 Earth Resistance, +9 Attack, +3 Ranged Attack, +5 Accuracy, +3 Ranged Accuracy, +4 HP and MP, and +3 Evasion. What's different this time around?
Job choice: Monk. Easily one of the best damage dealers in the entire game, and will constantly remain that way. Their low defense is offset by high VIT and the highest HP value of any class, but they're still not efficient tanks. Thank god for that. I get to sit back and punch things to death, and occasionally punch something harder with a weapon skill. If there's a good tank in the party, I have to do absolutely nothing. I get to watch as the sparks fly, and I outdamage everyone enough to constantly steal hate from the tank.
Money management: I've been smart with money, insofar that I've made a fucking shit ton of it. By ferrying cheap goods from the Jeuno auction house to San d'Oria or Bastok, I've been able to make enough money to not only fully support myself without having to be stingy with money, but I've also purchased a 500k gil airship pass, when, normally, you'd have to wait until rank 5 to get one (albeit for free). I've even gone so far as to buy other people things, and pay a friend for powerleveling (legitimate business venture). I am REALLY enjoying the game this time around, and I think I could take this far.
Beyond FFXI, I've also been trying to play World of Warcraft again, though I'm saddened to say I simply can't find the time. Anyone I play with has far outleveled me, which means when I play, it's almost always alone. On top of it all, whenever I find the time to play, I'm usually too tired to concentrate, and I'll get halfway through a quest before just giving up and going to sleep. One of these days, I'll make time for it. I also enjoy the game, but right now, it's not capturing me enough. One of these days.
Stay thirsty, my friends.
EDIT: Also, I made this post in an attempt to distract me from waiting for a party in Kazham. It didn't work, I still don't have a party.
