On my second playthrough,,,

I made it to Part 3 Chapter 11 - The blood contract.

The first time I played I took the easier task of defending for 12 turns, so this time I decided to challenge myself by defeating the boss - Ike.

It was possible - very hard - but possible.

The only thing he's really weak against is magic, so I had Laura knock him out with a Sleep staff while Micaiah Purged him. Then I just had the rest slowly whitle down his remaining hit points with conventional weapons.

The end result was dissappointing. Once defeated, he says the same thing he says after 12 turns - that they're holding out longer than he expected and it's time to regroup.

The only different was it lead to some remarkably depressing in battle convos. One with Sothe, one with Micaiah and a generic one for former allies.

Ike seemed pretty disturbed by their attitude and willingness to die for a cause he doesn't understand, so natually the angsty-ness led to some fic writing. The result might be used as a prologue for a longer work if I ever get arsed up to finish it.

Ike watched, stunned, as the boy in front of him smiled and thanked him. It was such a serene expression - grateful for the clean and easy death, bestowed on many undeserving enemies, that Ike found himself frightened by such willing martyrdom.

Sothe didn't give him much time to reconsider. Already he struck with a silver dagger. The strike, while accurate, was ineffective - glancing off Ike's heavy armour, leaving at most a scratch and a bruise that were easily healed and almost forgotten in the heat of the exchange.

Instinctively Ike responded - sinking Ragnell's sacred blade deep into the boy's side; but it was not the clean death he had planned. Falling to his knees, blood splashing bright copper on the castle's flagstones, Sothe stubbornly clung to life.

As he raised his blade a second time, intent on keeping his promise, he heard a scream and was forced to dodge a searing ray of light.

Looking up, he saw her standing on the castle battlements - the Silver-Haired Maiden. Her face was painted in anguish as she struggled in the grip of a Daein soldier, desperately trying to reach her fallen companion.

Who was this strange woman? Ike wondered. What power did she possess that caused men to throw themselves on the swords of their former allies?

Turning back to Sothe, he watched as the thief met his gaze with pain-filled despairing eyes. If he killed this boy, he might never know. Without hesitation, Ike struck the boy in the side of the head with the flat of his sword, knocking him unconscious.

“They're holding out longer than I thought!” He called to Ranulf. “Call a retreat.”

Then he gestured to the boy.

“And we're taking him with us.”
