50 Book Challenge 2010 #18 - 30

Wow, it's better than I've done ever!  It's all because of the Harry Dresden novels by Jim Butcher
  1. Storm Front
  2. Fool Moon
  3. Grave Peril
  4. Summer Knight
  5. Death Masks
  6. Blood Rights
  7. Dead Beat
  8. Proven Guilty
  9. White Knight
  10. Small Favor
  11. Turn Coat
  12. Changes
First of all - AMAZING! Second of all, HILARIOUS.  Third of all THOUGHTFUL.  Fourth of all - will stop that now - chronologically sound.  One of the first things that struck me was that each title, while being clever in itself, was fundamentally tied to the plot.  That's supposed to happen, right?  But it was so meaningfully attached to the plot.  Prime example is Dead Beat.  Zombies in this world (which is the modern world with a close overlap and neighbor to the Nevernever, land of the Faerie) are required to have a beat sounding for them to be "alive."This is to simulate the heartbeat as the body cannot remember how to function without one.  So logical! Why didn't anyone else think of that?

Also, the timeline is interesting too because everyone reads the series starting with Storm Front and it has a release date of 2008. However, three books read later in the plot line were released earlier, 2005.  I don't know if this was meant to happen, and I can't remember if earlier plot ideas are mentioned in the 2005 books.  It's cool.  Each book is one year later, and things like characters and skills are acquired in a timely fashion.  He does not start with the same power or skills as he ends with.

It was highly entertaining with both wit and sarcasm, fantasy and reality.  One of my favorite parts was when the PHYSICS of magic and potion making were described in a wonderfully believable way.  I actually considered adding the physics F=ma allusion into my physics instruction, but thought that my kids wouldn't like it, or get it.  In hindsight, I think I'll do it next year.  OH RIGHT, I won't be teaching physics next year (yay!). I highly recommend it to people who  like to read things that have no real practical purpose.

Oh, and the faeries? Not your Disney faeries.  More like the Brothers Grimm faeries.  Very very cool.
