The evening's rations-optional was a serving of reconstituted dried mushrooms, or an extra glass of vodka, the board at the end of the line announced.
Ruslan swallowed a sigh, because he knew exactly what sort of vodka that was; he'd been drinking it last night, and he still thought it might make a better boarding weapon than a method of getting pleasantly drunk.
Most of the men in the line--he hadn't bothered looking for the officers' mess, the sergeants usually had access to better food anyway, especially with how long resupply was taking that month--were going for the vodka.
When he got close enough to get a look at the mushrooms, he could see why. Most of the time, mushrooms were a treat food, especially if someone in the kitchen could fake sour cream to simmer them in.
He really wished he could forget the time he'd found out that someone could manage that with shchi-cabbage water and powdered milk. He still wasn't entirely comfortable with eating dairy products this far out in the black, after that incident. Not least because he'd been coming back for his third helping when he'd found out.
But these particular mushrooms were exactly what the board claimed them to be: reconstituted. Probably not in vodka, but he wouldn't have made a bet on it.
He told the server with one ladle out and one ladle tucked in his apron he'd have the mushrooms anyway.
The man gave him a bit of a look, then pulled out the ladle he'd tucked away and dolloped a serving of fungi onto his plate, set the ladle down next to the tureen, instead of tucking it back in his pocket.
Ruslan gave him a polite nod, and went looking for one of the sergeants he hadn't been drinking with last night.
Any news, please. Anything but 'we still haven't heard' or 'no new orders, yet.'
