Notes: He smiled, slowly. "Did Holly ever get to plant her flowers?"
The man appearing in a burst of light was startled. The girl with a carving knife and a hand on a rabbit hutch nearly fell over backwards in shock.
"THAT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN," she told him, very nearly at the top of considerable lungs.
He blinked at her mildly, then stuck a finger in the ear closest to her and rotated it a bit, very carefully not making a face at her.
" . . Sorry. You scared me." She put the knife down in a showy peace gesture. "You're still glowing."
"Sorry," he said, and stopped.
She blinked. "How are you doing that?"
"May I see what you were working on?" he asked, instead of replying.
She ran a hand through short-cropped dark hair, scowling at him, then backed away, so he could see. "It's just a protection symbol. We've been losing rabbits."
He'd half-knelt to look at the wood, and was running his fingers gently across the fresh cuts. After a moment, he looked up at her, a smile spreading across his face that at its widest made her want to shield her eyes, more than when he'd actually been glowing.
"Did Holly ever get to plant her flowers?" he asked, and she stared at him.
" . . . Come and talk to mamán," she said, eventually. "She was a baby when 'dame Holly died."
