A (not-so) noble experiment

As everyone is fully aware, the Fourth Edition of D&D has existed for...well, a while. People have said all manner of things about it; Fixes 3.5, fails compared to 3.5, too restricted, more balanced in favor of people who don't want to learn all the varied rules, discourages creativity and roleplaying, too jRPGish, too much like WoW, too easy for players, not enough Leeroy Jenkins, etc.

For a while, I've been skeptical of it, on the denouncing side of it (more precisely, I admit to being an 'elitist' powergamer in 3.5, particularly with ToB later on). However, I feel like I'm not being fair in that regard. In addition, I have admittedly been influenced by a number of RPGWW friends of mine who have tried 4e and said that it plays well.

So, in an attempt to at least try and have some sort of an empirical basis on which to test the system, I will be attempting to try to play in a 4e game. (Further blame goes to another person for potentially throwing in a Tales-series theme to it, for tempting me more. :P)

So why am I posting this in my LJ after it's been dead for so long? Two things.

1: To give myself something to do, and maintain a weekly schedule throughout the break, possibly giving me enough structure to keep up with the rest of the regular tasks.

2: What the hell. Might as well have something to talk with other people about, either via comments or over IM. This journal needs something aside from bitching anyway.

3: I intend on making a series out of this, essentially, tracking my personal experiences with the system from first creation to campaign end/death, along with summing up campaign events as best I could. This is partly inspired by, yes, Shamus' record of his RP deal before he started DM of the Rings, and Brian's logs of his 3.5e Gaera tabletop D&D RP.

So there you have it. A skeptic attempting to play D&D 4e before he finalizes his opinion.
