I don't remember when I made the transition from a girl absolutely frozen to the spot at HS sophomore winter formal to last night, where I went to a salsa club knowing nothing about salsa dance except the basic steps. It was a bit nerve racking and scary, but the things you're scared of are usually the most worthwhile and last night definitely was.
Although my roommate didn't come, her friend Geoffrey and I took a bus to HaLo near capitol Hill. Ever since London, I've been meaning to try out salsa. My friend had gone nearly every other night to salsa clubs and had described the grinding-style of normal clubs as "people convulsing on the floor". I thought the phrase to be pretty accurate but never really saw how different salsa is until last night. While salsa can be dirty, most of it is light, energetic and sexy. The music is fun to listen to and I loved the twirling =).
The thing about Salsa is that the guy needs to be pretty good at leading. I found out about this the hard way when I danced with two other guys who are both not that good and ended up feeling foolish on the dance floor. In all fairness, I pretty much sucked as well (I knocked the glasses off of my partner half way through one dance, haha) but as a girl, salsa is much easier if you've got a lead who knows how to turn and how to twirl you around.
I was wearing my 4 inch heels the whole time and after an afternoon of canoeing, I am incredibly proud of myself for not simply collapsing when we left at midnight. My night out simply reminded me that I should've taken salsa lessons two years ago instead of waiting till two weeks before graduation. But. that is what my year off is for ^^
