Although I've insisted that I would be a very good biology tutor, the student athletic services assigned me to tutor statistics to an offensive line football player. My previous experience with student athletes were not very promising, I had one student in my biol 100 class, who had "i don't want to be here" written all over his face. No matter how I tried to tell him, you need to know what we're doing in lab to do well in class, he had no motivation for anything unrelated to his sport. Needless to say, I did not go to my first tutor session last night with my football guy with high hopes.
Of course, it is a truth universally accepted that life will surprise you. My football guy (For the purpose of this entry, we'll call him...Freddie), turned out to be friendly, down-to-earth and fun to talk to, albeit, he is nearly two feet taller than me and more than twice my weight. Most people think of student athletes as someone trying take the easy road out of college, but really, just because they're not taking biochemistry doesn't mean their days are easier. Their schedules are just as tough as us Pre-Meds, only in a different way. They put in an incredible amount of time into training and the NCAA rules are so strict that they can't put a toe out of line or else they would lose eligibility to compete.
I am always fascinated by people or cultures that are different than me or my view of the world, one of the biggest reasons I love history, India, Europe or why I read odd historical fiction about Helen of Troy or Cleopatra. I love trying out new things and this tutoring gig certain gives me an insight into a part of campus I never really stopped to look at or appreciate.
At the end of the night, Freddie offered to walk me home which I declined since I was planning on taking the bus anyway. He told me to call him if I run into any trouble. I suppose I do look a little vulnerable to a 6 ft 8 guy. Haha.
