more introductions

So what with this emotional-spectrum-blackest-night nonsense going on, the second-generation scans_daily comms brought up the idea of light outside the visible spectrum used as a basis for Lantern rings. And then, a certain person who shall remain nameless and knows exactly who she is pointed out the potential for Fractured Fairy Tales.

I bring you the introduction to The Lantern's New Clothes.

“I don’t wanna give you the idea that Hal was great all the time, kid.” Guy leaned back against the garish bench, spreading his arms wide enough that he nearly knocked John upside the head.

“I, well, no,” Kyle said, making the perfectly rational assumption that Guy was referring to Parallax. He’d already met Parallax. It hadn’t been pleasant, and it wasn’t something he was interested in rehashing.

“Let me tell you,” Guy said, grinning wolfishly.

It wasn’t really an appropriate expression, Kyle decided, but who was he to call Guy freakin’ Gardner on it? And since it didn’t look like either John or Alan seemed interested in changing the subject, he just squirmed.

“Let me tell you,” Guy said again, oblivious to Kyle’s discomfort, “about the Ultraviolet Lantern.”

Train of thought derailed, Kyle could only blink. “The what?” he asked cautiously into the expectant pause. Alan looked just as confused as he felt, but John was rolling his eyes. That was a first; John was usually fairly patient.

“The Ultraviolet Lantern,” Guy repeated. At Kyle’s continuing bewilderment, Guy grabbed his ring hand. “Look, you manipulate green light with this.”

“Yeah?” Kyle said, not seeing where the explanation was going.

“That crazy kid, Nero. Tore up half of New York.”

Kyle nodded impatiently for Guy to continue; he knew very well who Alex Nero was.

“He manipulates yellow light, yeah?” Guy didn’t wait for Kyle’s acknowledgement this time before plowing on. “So the Ultraviolet Lantern works with ultraviolet light.”

“But you can’t see ultraviolet light,” Kyle said, still confused.

“Exactly.” Guy smirked.

A quick glance at the other two didn’t help. Alan was pinching the bridge of his nose, expression pained, while John had gone from rolling his eyes to the very picture of long-suffering resignation. “So?” Kyle said finally.

Guy sighed and draped an arm across his shoulder. “I see I’ll have to begin at the beginning.”
