Day 22 - Favourite series finale.

When I first saw this I thought this was going to be another really easy one. However, then I thought again and realised it meant the complete end of a series, not the best season finale. I ran through all the shows that I enjoy that have finished totally, but a lot of them simply didn't have dramatic ends or even special ends and others I didn't care for. So I decided what the heck, I'm going to twist this a little and go with 'season finale' instead.

And that is simple. It's this season's end to Grey's Anatomy.

The episode, a double length one (show on the same evening) was everything any producer/writer/director must wish they'd produced and should aim for.

It was edge of seat stuff from beginning to end, the pace was great, the story-line superb and gripping and yet even in the midst of the angst and fears and OMG WTF is going to happen, there was touches of humour and spot on banter.

In short the husband of a dead patient who blamed Derek for turning of her life support machine comes to the hospital to kill Derek. But he doesn't stop at Derek, there's the proverbial blood bath and we lose people, cast, recurring characters, not just minors. Derek is shot and badly injured and close to death. And for most of the episode we had no idea if he'd live or die and on top of that Meredith discovers she is pregnant and before she can tell Derek he's shot in front of her eyes and then later on she miscarries.

The episode follows the lives of all the main characters and those who have appeared on and off and off and on this season, moving seamlessly from one story to another, but it all tied in to one: a mad man (in all meanings of the word) was loose with a gun and set not just on revenge but on killing.

And it didn't leave us hanging on the edge with bated breath waiting all summer to see who lived and who died; it wound it up. Yes, there are still outstanding story-lines and things to be resolved, but nothing life threatening. Instead it did what any good show does: it resolved within a self-contained episode.

Yes, I did have one or two issues with a particular story-line, but I've had those throughout this season once it started, but that was one teeny-weeny negative amongst the amazingly powerful and brilliant. The writing, acting, directing were all first rate.

I didn't bother trying to find some clips on YouTube, because it wouldn't do justice to it, as my babble doesn't, the only justice that can be done is to watch the whole thing.

J and I stopped several times just to draw breath during it and both say we have never seen anything as good, as powerful, as amazing, as this double episode.

This season ending should be sent to all producers/writers/directors/cast to see what a real edge of seat, gripping, tense, fast paced episode that still includes humour, superb character interaction and banter is like. If it doesn't win some kind of award for writing, acting, etc., then there really is no justice in 'Hollywood'.
