McGee sat down at his desk. On it was large, bulky envelope. It was addressed to 'Special Agent Timothy McGee' and marked 'Strictly Private and Confidential'. He frowned for a moment, then opened it carefully. He took everything out and turned his attention to the envelope which stated: 'Read this first'.

He read the opening line of the letter.

Dear Agent McGee. You were right, I did kill Admiral Fenshaw's son. But I had my reasons. He was a bully and worse. He made my life hell every single day.

McGee read on. He was shocked and disgusted by what he read. By what Petty Officer Keaton had suffered and endured for three long years. How could it have gone unnoticed? Had it gone unnoticed?

Along with Keaton's letter were several other letters. One from his doctor; one from his Catholic Priest; one from a shelter for homeless veterans; one from a charity that worked with the elderly.

All of the letters spoke of how kind, how generous, how caring, how helpful Keaton was. How nothing was too much trouble. What a good man he was. A good man who had done one bad thing. A good man who had less than two months to live.

It had been one of the first cases McGee had worked on. DiNozzo had been on leave and McGee had worked closely with Gibbs. They'd never been able to break Keaton. They both knew he'd killed Fenshaw, but not even Gibbs could prove it.

Eighteen years. McGee could remember it as if it were yesterday. He looked across the squad room to where Parker, Knight and Torres were gathered.

Suddenly McGee accepted what he'd known for some time: he no longer fitted in. NCIS was no longer his home; the team he knew was gone. Even Palmer and Kasie seemed to have moved on. Team Gibbs was no more.

He read Keaton's letter one more time. Glanced at Parker and made a decision. Before he could change his mind, he wrote and signed a short letter. He closed down his computer and, badge in hand, headed up the stairs to Vance's office.

He'd sign the lease of the apartment he shared with Delilah and the twins, over to Delilah. Then he'd catch the first flight to Alaska; find Gibbs; show him Keaton's letter and the other letters and tell him he'd come to stay.
