AUTHOR'S NOTE: I told J the three clues, that it was an NCIS story and that it was to do with nature. He managed to get the answer. So hopefully anyone who reads it will be able to as well.
DiNozzo sat down at his computer, flexed his fingers, typed in a URL and looked at the screen. "Okay," he said. "Day nine; the final day. We can do this. Are you two ready?" He looked at McGee and Ziva; they both nodded.
"It's a two word answer. Clue one: 'Cut-off shopping centre'. There's a hyphen between 'cut' and 'off'." He frowned. "I don't get that one."
"Read us the other two, Tony," Ziva demanded.
"Okay. Clue two: 'A one time kitchen cooking staple'. Clue three: 'A term of endearment in the Midlands'. The Midlands?"
"It's part of England, Anthony," Ducky said, as he and Gibbs came into the squad room.
"Oh. Thanks, Ducky." DiNozzo flashed Ducky a smile and went back to frowning at the screen.
"May I ask what you are doing, Anthony?"
"It's this daily nature quiz thing I found. Sort of like a crossword, but without a crossword. It runs for nine days. Each day we get three clues and they lead to that day's answer, which has something to do with nature. We don't know the number of letters in the answer, just the number of words. Today there are two. So far McGeek, Ziva and me have got all the answers right."
"I see. It sounds rather intriguing. How are you getting on today?" Ducky enquired.
DiNozzo shook his head. "I don't know any of them. What about you two?"
Ziva shook her head. "I have no ideas."
"McGee. What about you?"
McGee shrugged, shook his head and carried on typing. "I'm just Googling 'terms of endearment in the Midlands'."
"What were today's other clues?" Ducky asked.
DiNozzo read them out.
Ducky frowned for a moment and then chuckled. "Ah," he said. "I confess that is clever. You three should have no problem with it at all. You know one. Now, my dear," he returned to Gibbs's desk. "I thought we could go out to dinner tonight, rather than me cooking. If, of course, that is acceptable to you."
"Sure, Duck. Whatever you say."
"Good. Well, children, good luck. If you are stuck. Just remember the last thing I told you." And with those words, Ducky sailed out of the squad room.
"Huh?" DiNozzo said. He looked at McGee and Ziva. "Well?" They shook their heads. "Boss?"
Gibbs looked up. "It was here, it no longer is. Five minutes."
"Boss?"
"To work it out."
