Tim sits at the desk in the Director's office, now his desk in his office, and looks around him. Apart from each Director's personal touches, everything is the same as the first day he went into the room.
Yet so much has changed, in so short a time.
A week ago his desk had been in the squad room. He had been the Senior Field Agent and, not for the first time, had been regretting his decision not to be considered for Team Leader. He liked Parker, but he was no Gibbs. Finally he had accepted that with Ducky's death, Gibbs would not return to NCIS or even to DC.
He had been called up to the Director's office to find Vance and the SecNav waiting for him. They had offered; he had accepted there and then.
Now he was Director of NCIS.
A week ago he'd had a wife and two children living in DC. Now his soon to be ex-wife and their children were on the opposite side of the world. Delilah had been offered a once-in-a-lifetime job and had accepted it there and then. Tim had returned home to find her packing for her and the twins.
It wasn't so much a case of him and Delilah falling out of love, but a case of admitting, of accepting, they had never really been in love. Tim had proposed for the wrong reasons; Delilah had accepted for the wrong reasons. They still cared about one another and would always be friends, but both had accepted it was time to end their marriage.
He gets up from his desk and starts to unpack the box of photographs he had brought with him. Photographs of Team Gibbs. The 'old' Team Gibbs; his Team Gibbs. The team that no longer existed.
