In the midst of an ice storm
come the sagging angles of a
farmhouse leaning largely against
a field. In the country, winter
is defined by the hues of shadow
against nighttime snow.
By the end of February, the farmhouse
is defined by its minimum structure:
a concrete foundation, four corner beams,
the delicate skeleton of unburned boards.
But also remnants of childhood photos,
the singed skins of four dead cats,
a ring.
