A true confession: backgrounds are a challenge for me. We want all the focus to be on the figure and that is easier to do when you don't have anything in the background distracting you. I think backgrounds are a challenge for most pin-up artists; which is why so many of them do their work as vignettes (Olivia, Vargus, George Petty for example). When I first started out doing Nakedcomix, nearly all my work was vignettes. But it in general that makes for a poor composition. So in recent years I have worked on trying to use the whole image area.
In this piece I design my own moorish tile and saved it as a pattern in Illustrator. The hair and the fan Libby was holding gave a spanish feeling to the piece. So I wanted to go along with that but not come up with something too complex. In the future I'd like my background to work more with the figure to make a more stronger piece. For now though I'm happy that they just accent the beauty of the model.
