Quick concert note

The Decemberists? In concert? Rock.

Seriously, they were awesome. They sounded just fantastic, and were incredibly goofy and fun to watch. I truly never thought I'd ever see Colin Meloy thrashing around the stage just WAILING on an acoustic guitar, but he rocked OUT.

Their encore was "The Chimbley Sweep" and they just went nuts in the middle. In the last verse, when it gets all quiet for the "O lonely urchin" line, they spent seriously 10 or 15 minutes just vamping, messing around (the drummer sang the line in various silly voices) and finally made the whole club sit down (!) and the whole band sat down on the stage and got really quiet so Petra could sing the verse, and then when Colin came back in on "I am a poor and a wretched boy" they stood back up and, bam, damn, it was hilarious. Rock and roll, my friends.

The crowd was exactly what you'd expect at a Decemberists show. :) Tragic young hipsters and aging hipsters in equal measure. The club turns into a serious hip-hip dance club later in the night, and watching the two crowds pass each other outside the club was pretty funny. (Look at all the white people heading home!)
