Mingyu has a habit of tilting his head 30 degrees to the right with a line forming in between his eyebrows when he’s concentrating on something.

Which is exactly what he has been doing for the past hour. His current focus is the painting they’re supposed to submit tomorrow, but it doesn’t seem like he’s had any progress judging by the amount of times he’s picked up his eraser. Never mind the fact eraser can’t actually erase paints.

Yerin has given up asking him to show her his canvas, or at least tell her what he is actually attempting to draw. She’s finished hers a while ago; a painting of a dolphin, which he frowned at. The theme of their painting this week is ‘self-portrait’. Apparently he doesn’t share her view.

“I mean, you’re more like a jellyfish, you know? You’re pretty but you sting,” he said. It’s unclear to her whether that was a compliment or the opposite, so she ignored him and told him to go home. He ignored her back.

During middle school, a tanned boy with funny haircut and a pair of canine teeth transferred to her class and sat behind her. She helped him read the score in Music class, and somehow since then he sticks himself to her side like a gum. Over the years, he grew out of his awkward phase and into a boy that she needs to look up to when she speaks to him. It felt strange at first, especially when she started to notice the stares he was getting from the girls, like witnessing a seed sprouting into a tree that now provides shade.

In between fretting over a maths problem and considering taking out the novel in her backpack, she glances at him again. A grin has appeared across his face, like he’s pleased with his artwork. His canine teeth are one of the few things about him that still remain, and she thinks that’s a part of their childhood that will always stay with them.

“Are you done?” she asks.

Mingyu’s face lights up as he finally puts down the brush and pushes his hair out of his face with the back of his hand. Does he even realize the orange smudge on his cheek? He looks at her first before turning the canvas around, and provides his own sound effect at the same time.

She blinks. “A snow man?”

“Yeah!” he replies, sounding extremely satisfied. She still doesn’t get it. Her eyes wander back and forth from the painting to him. Sensing her perplexity, he offers the answer. “Yerin’s favourite thing!”

She’s quiet for a while, dumbfounded. Stares at him for a little longer, then starts laughing so hard that her eyes begin to form tears. He looks even more pleased with himself.

The next day, Mingyu explained to the class that his self-portrait is a snow man because he’s a cold city guy. At the back of the class, Yerin tries to muffle her laugh. He sends her a wink after he wraps up, the funny kind, and somehow she thinks she doesn’t mind if she’s stuck with him for eternity.
