Chapter 4:
Chinen felt as though a heavy weight had been pushed against his body, slowly opening his eyes he was greeted with the night sky. Confusion overtook him as the night’s events slowly replayed in his mind.
Realizing that there was a steady breath against his chest, he looked down to see Yuto peacefully sleeping.
‘Well, at least one of us is comfortable,” he thought smiling to himself despite the fact that his body was beginning to feel numb, he felt content just being able to be close to the other boy.
Freeing one of his hands from Yuto’s body, he gently began to stroke the top of Yuto’s head, being careful as to not wake him.
Remembering back to Yuto’s words, he felt his chest tighten with deep regret. He claimed that he was the one who cared for Yuto the most, but in reality he had been too immersed with his own feelings to even realize Yuto had become this depressed person. If only he had realized sooner, he was sure Yuto was strong, but sometimes people needed others to lean on, which he didn’t allow Yuto to get close to anyone. He had left Yuto to deal with his problems alone, he felt terrible. Lost in his own thoughts, he began to mindlessly play with Yuto’s hair as he stared blankly into the night sky.
Yuto awoke to a nice sensation; usually he hated it when someone touched his hair but somehow he found himself enjoying it and remained silently in that position. It was comforting somehow and it just felt so nice. Shifting his position for more comfort he soon regretted the action for the hand had stopped its ministrations. Slowly opening his eyes he heard a familiar voice say, “You’re heavy.”
Finally out of his sleeping state, he jolted out of his position, embarrassed to be lying in such a way.
“Sorry,” he replied sheepishly. After repositioning themselves so that they were now sitting side by side, both boys sat awkwardly in silence.
Yuto, for one, was absolutely embarrassed for crying in front of Chinen the way he did and waking up on top of him didn’t help much either. Chinen, on the other hand, was unsure what to say and how to explain his own sudden change of behaviour. He worried Yuto would ask him why he was acting the way he was because in truth, he didn’t know how he would reply, he could never tell Yuto the real reason. If so, he would certainly lose every connection he had with him, which was something he had feared for a very long time.
Chinen wanted more than anything now to get close to Yuto as possible in order to support him out of his troubles. He didn’t ever want Yuto to feel lonely the way he did again, the only problem now was how he could suddenly change to a supportive friend from a rude one who didn’t care. What was worse, would Yuto be willing to accept his support? Especially when he had been one of the causes as to why Yuto felt so excluded in the first place.
Finally Yuto was the one who broke the silence, “Wow, I can’t believe we fell asleep out here, I checked and we’ve been sleeping for an hour. We have school tomorrow so we should head home.”
“Yeah...” Chinen replied, feeling somewhat disappointed that this was going to be the end result. What made it worse was that Yuto wasn’t looking his way, although it was more out of embarrassment if anything, Chinen however mistook it as a sign of rejection. This only made him feel the gap between them was a much larger one that he could mend. Getting up he politely declared his leave and Chinen hopelessly watched his back silently. Could they go back to the way they used to be or would they continue to speak formally as strangers forever?
‘How can I reach you?’ he thought sadly.

He yanked out the weed and groaned angrily unable to get the entire root. Lunch time had come sooner than expected and despite what anyone thought, he didn’t completely ignore yard duty. He worked the bare minimum everyday at the very least.
Looking over at the window, he could see Yuto working arduously on his homework. He smiled sadly, it was the same afterall, Yuto was alone and he was once again watching him from a distance. It was fine wasn’t it? He had watched Yuto from a distance before, why did he suddenly think otherwise anyways? Plus, he had pride, he wasn’t going to back down, if he let himself fall for such a trap he would definitely become over obsessive again and that would not be for the better, he was sure of it. Suddenly, he saw Yuto cover his face with both hands; he was definitely crying again and he cringed seeing him try to vigorously wipe away his own tears.
‘Ah! Screw my pride!’ Chinen thought grabbing a small pebble on the ground and throwing it at the windowsill. Once again his body worked against him, he was unprepared and he felt himself grow small as Yuto got up from his seat and walk towards the window. Opening the window, he looked confused and surprised to see Chinen holding a shovel and some weeds.
“Um...hi! Let’s have lunch together!”Chinen yelled, slowly feeling confident in his own words.

Yuto stared in awe at the garden Chinen was working on, he had never paid attention to the school’s courtyard before; the rose bushes were cut neatly and the grass had never looked so green. The cherry blossoms only added to the scenery. He took in a breath of fresh air and smiled happily. Looking over to Chinen, he could see the boy scowling angrily at the stubborn weed.
“Do you need help?” Yuto asked sincerely.
“No, it’s my responsibility so I must do it myself.” He said proudly.
Yuto smiled, “That’s a very Chii-like answer.”
Chinen looked at Yuto for a moment, shocked that Yuto would use that line again, one he hadn’t heard in so long. Touched by just hearing ‘Chii-like’ from Yuto, he added more effort in digging up the next weed.
Seeing Chinen’s determination made Yuto smile but recalling the embarrassing events of last night made him look down once again shyly.
“Hey,” he said gently holding onto Chinen’s sleeve, “thanks for yesterday, thank you for listening. The truth is all that stuff I said about wanting to leave Johnny’s and hating you, it wasn’t true. I’m sorry I said such horrible things; the truth is I was just sad over other things. You know, I overheard my parents talking and they said Mama is going to take Raiya and leave for sure. They’re leaving me.”
He forced a smile but a tear managed to escape again.
“Oh god, the tears won’t stop, this must be weird for you I’m sorry,” he laughed sheepishly.
Chinen looked sadly at Yuto. ‘Don’t apologize,’ he thought unable to say the words. He could understand how hard it was for Yuto, he knew how much Yuto loved Raiya, there were days he couldn’t stop talking about how much he missed his brother when they had their tours. Life was so cruel and it was even sadder to see Yuto hold back his tears so painfully.
Still laughing at himself and rubbing his eyes with his sleeves he said softly, “You know you’re the first person I cried in front of so I feel terrible for making you feel uncomfortable-”
Chinen shook his head and quickly cut him off, not wanting to hear anymore apologies. Although he felt awful for him, he was somewhat happy to hear he was the first person Yuto had opened up to, even if it was merely by chance, it didn’t change the fact that he was the first, did it?
“Do you think it’s for sure?” he said with concern and Yuto could only nod feeling more tears fall. Unsure of what to say, he sat silently. Talking people out of their troubles had never been his forte, he was known for having a sharp tongue after all.
Feeling words would only sound empty he hastily searched his memory to try to remember the things that had comforted him in his own tough times. An idea instantly popped into his head and he dropped the shovel and yanked off his gardening gloves. Walking over to the cherry blossom tree, he sat down in the shade and motioned Yuto to come over. Yuto who still had tears brimming the rims of his eyes walked curiously over to Chinen. Chinen smiled and patted his lap. Yuto stared at the lap for a while, unsure of what Chinen wanted him to do.
“Come on, put your head here.” Chinen said once again patting his lap.
Yuto blinked in confusion, “Eh? ...but Chinen, this is embarrassing...” he said lightly blushing. Even though they did it for photo shoots, they never spontaneously lay on each other’s laps otherwise. It was just odd really, to do such a thing.
“Just do it, hurry up before I change my mind!” Chinen replied pouting somewhat blushing himself now.
Not wanting to see Chinen mad and curious as to what Chinen would do, he complied. As he nervously rested his head on top of Chinen’s lap he looked up curiously at the other boy. Cautiously, Chinen began to gently run his hands through Yuto’s hair. Yuto, who was laying rigid felt himself slowly relax to the other boys touch, the painful feelings of all his troubles slowly calmed and he could hear Chinen’s gentle words.
“There there, everything is going to be okay.” Yuto’s eyes widened because somehow, even though Chinen only said such simple words, he felt as though everything would truly be okay now, suddenly he felt his heart skip a beat. Unsure of what this feeling was, he somehow felt truly happy.
Chinen scoffed at himself, embarrassed. “I don’t know any other way to help you, but when I’m sad this is what my mom does for me and I always feel better. It’s probably not the same affect because I’m doing it though.” He looked somewhat depressed as he let out a sigh.
“No,” Yuto said quietly, “It worked, thank you.”
Hearing this Chinen grinned back at Yuto. With the background of the blue sky and Chinen’s smiling face, the only word that could describe what Yuto thought of Chinen’s smile at that moment was beautiful.

A/N: *gets objects thrown at her* Ahhh! Ok Sorry guys, this is such a late update, my goodness. I apologize. I’ve been busily preparing for the year to come.
But I’m still just as excited to write this story. I will try my best to not leave such a hiatus from happening again!
I’ve also been thinking of some new stories, so I’m wondering what kind of ratings my readers like. Are there any things you guys are uncomfortable with reading? Please do tell me because I’d love to hear your thoughts. <333
