Title: Danger: High Explosives
'Verse: Psychomachia
Rating: none
Author's Note: This piece manages to make me laugh every time I read it. Very Laurie and Ty-centric. Quick explanation for anyone reading it: The characters are essentially the same as in The Effect 'verse, however, there are some significant changes due to the society they are now living in. Psychomachia is set in a post-apocalyptic type earth. I'll make a post explaining it in greater deal when I can get my thoughts organized. ^^ The key thing to know here is that there are two main separations in society in Psychomachia. The domed cities, such as Port Atlantis, and the Rim, the dead land outside of the cities. The crew lives in the Rim. They're pirates.

Ty, Keith, and George all belong to guiltycross. Chris and Laurie are of my creation.

Laurie had taken over the security seal that Chris had stolen-borrowed!-from the ship they’d scrapped. She didn’t really have anything in mind for it. She rarely did. But what she managed to create or upgrade usually turned out exceptional. The things that didn’t, well, she just never showed those off.

Ty was bored-Chris was sleeping, lazy thing-and so offered his assistance. Laurie permitted him.

“What did ya wanna do with it?” Ty asked her, leaning against her work table.

“I don’t know,” she said with a shrug, taking a tool to the little hand-held device. A wisp of hair floated in front of her face. She brushed it back impatiently. “I just want to take a look at it, for now. Here, can you hold this for me?” Pushing the tool in his hand, she held up the seal and examined it in the bright light above. “Basically, these things protect against most forms of invasive attacks. Sort of like the dome around PA, except on a smaller level. And you can only see the force field at certain angles, and in certain lighting. It’s amazing. Here, let’s activate it.”

She pushed a button, and the force field swept over her table. Ty jumped back as it connected with his backside, causing a peculiar and most uncomfortable numbing sensation. “Oh geez!” he groaned. “Warn a guy!”

“I did!” she cried indignantly. “It’s not my fault you’re so pokey.” She stuck her tongue out at him, and proceeded to focus her attention on the force field. “I wonder just how much this thing protects against.”

Ty’s face lit up. It sounded like an invitation for explosives. “Wanna find out?”

The ceiling and walls shook. Keith’s head jerked up, alarmed. “What the hell was that?” he barked at George as he pelted out of the room, his long legs flying. George followed him at a stroll.

Keith skidded to a stop in front of Laurie’s workshop. The door was jammed, and there was smoke billowing up front under the crack. He shoved the full weight of his body against it until the door crashed open under the force.

“Laurie! Are you-” He stopped. Laurie and Ty were throwing little Ty-made bombs at her work table, laughing hysterically as they impacted against nothingness and exploded.

“What the hell are you two doin’?” Keith demanded, stalking forward. The pair looked up guiltily, their faces streaked with smoke. George made it to the room, standing in the doorway and leaning against the broken hinge casually.

“Looks like they’ve got something against the table. It pick a fight with you?” he asked in a low drawl.

Laurie pulled out her ear plugs and shook her head. “We’re testing the security seal that Chris brought back!” she explained cheerfully. “Look, see? No damage done.” She gestured to the table, which remained in perfect condition, aside from the huge mess of Laurie-type gadgets and tools that cluttered it. The room around the table, however, was in less than pristine shape.

Keith rubbed his temples. “Could you think to maybe do that outside? You know, where there isn’t the possibility of you blowin’ up the whole base?”

From behind George, Chris came tumbling in, his hair tousled and eyes drooping, wearing nothing more than his rubber ducky printed underwear. “Wusgoinon? There an earthquake?” he mumbled.

“Nah. Ty’s just blowin’ things up again,” George reassured him before glancing over at him. His eyebrows raised. “Plannin’ on gettin’ some clothes on, kid?”

“No time to dress in emergency type situations,” Chris replied with a yawn and a stretch. “I’m gonna go back to sleep. Quit blowin’ things up, Kiwi.” He grinned suddenly. “Unless you’re blowin’ me.” He exited with a strut.

“CHRIS!” Laurie screeched, clamping her hands over her ears, a blush making her freckles stand out against her cheeks and nose.

“Whud he say?” Ty asked in confusion, ear plugs still in place.

With the ban on explosives in the base, Laurie and Ty went back to examining the device itself. Laurie was an energetic worker, practically bouncing around the table as she fetched different tools and such. Ty, bored just watching, poked a tool at the device to see what it would do. Laurie slapped his hand away.

“You’ll destabilize the molecular synthesizer!”

He blinked at her. “What?”

She flashed him a smile. “Just kidding. Sounded smart though, huh?” She hummed and took out a spring. Ty noticed that she didn’t seem to pay any attention whatsoever to what she was doing, or what parts she was removing.

But all at once, or so it seemed to Ty, though they’d probably been working for hours, she had created a near replica. And in the process, apparently, had come up with an idea for how to use it. She reached out for him and fastened her copy to his belt buckle.

“The invincible Ty!” she proclaimed. “See? I’ll make one for each of us!”

“Oooh. Excellent!” He grabbed her hand and twirled her. “Let’s go tell Devo. Maybe it’ll make up for the explosions if he knew we were productive doin’ it.”

“There are many sacrifices for genius,” Laurie said sagely as they left the work shop.

Out of all the other crew, Chris was probably the least impressed with Ty’s private little force field. That was largely due to Ty using it against him every chance he got. Chris demanded Laurie make him one immediately. Then Ty and Chris engaged in a series of battles (outside) involving throwing explosives at each other.

“Nice,” Keith said in disgust to Laurie as they watched the two run around, hooting like American Indians. “You’ve just given them weapons to enforce their idiocy.”

“That’s nice,” Laurie said inattentively. “Look, Keith!” she said triumphantly. “I bet you I can make a force field for the ship too. I just need Chris to help me program it. CHRIS! You big fat idiot, get over here!”

He tripped in the dirt. Ty laughed. Chris flipped him off weakly.
