There's a story in the Bible about Lot and his wife, who lived in Sodom and Gomorrha. Back in the Old Testament days, this was a wicked, sinful, disgusting place to be. But God spared Lot and his family, because of a promise God had made. But God warned Lot and his family NOT TO LOOK BACK at the destruction (because God did destroy that place).
Lot's wife looked back at what they had, what they were leaving behind. And she perished because of it, because she looked back.
Christians do that a lot. I've done it.
We come to know Christ. God keeps His promise of salvation and even blesses us, and then we take a peek back at the sinful life we left behind... just one glance to make sure we should really have left it all behind. What happens? We are weakened and the destruction comes to our souls, our hearts, and our minds. Once you know Christ, you are saved.... salvation is yours.
I looked back a couple of times since I went on the church retreat that brought me straight into the Kingdom of God and caused me to be raised up as a leader in the church. Yes, I looked back (but thankfully I didn't perish because of what Christ did for me by dying on the cross).
However looking back at what you left behind has consequences.... emotional, mental, and spiritual ones.... even physical ones. Why? Because you are patting your foot on the ground you once walked to see if it was really solid or not. You are looking back to see if what you left behind WAS indeed that bad. And that's what Satan uses to confuse you and to open up a back door so he can come in and steal the good work that God is doing in your life. Satan tried to steal me away. I tapped my foot on the ground I once walked and thought it was solid. I thought for a moment that it could be walked upon. But when I went to put weight on it, I sank. And Satan laughed. But God, in His goodness, pulled me up and planted me on His solid ground.
Don't look back. Don't tap or tread on the sinking, shifting sands you once walked upon. Keep looking straight head towards the Father. Let the Holy Spirit lead you. If you are tempted to even glance back at what you left behind, read the story of Sodom and Gomorrha and be reminded.
Then ask yourself, is taking one glance back worth giving up the joy and blessings that God has waiting for you up ahead...?
