Dollhouse: Faith No More

I guess this is either the season of disappointment, or of me turning into a curmudgeon. First JK Rowling, now Joss Whedon...

So last Friday I watched the first Dollhouse episode, "Echo." Will I watch the next tomorrow?  Probably not.  As far as I can tell from the first, the basic premises of the series are:

(1) What if the Initiative from 4th- ( Read more... )

Oh dear. I didn't actually watch it (yet; I figure I'll get the DVD's later), but it doesn't surprise me too much that it's off to a slow start. Neither Angel nor Buffy had their best episodes in the first part of their first seasons. (I seem to remember Firefly starting off more promisingly, but it's been a while now since I saw it.) Joss sometimes takes a few weeks to find his footing.

But the lack of funny? Oh, that's a problem. Joss definitely needs to begin with funny, or at least sprinkle it in regularly.

Ep 1 of Angel was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen!

Huh, it's been too long for me to remember the details. But I do remember that Doyle really perked the show up in that first season, bless his Irish heart. (My softness on him has nothing to do with the cuteness and the lovely accent; no, nothing at all...)

The second ep. is much better that the first. I have no problems with the continued existence of the criminal organization, America is full of them. The FBI is a total flaw. It's one of the worst FBIs ever. All face to face mockery. Anyone including the FBI should watch the X-Files. FBI agents are usually doing their jobs, not making fun of their co-workers.

The kidnappers sucked, as did the stock story. ep. 2 is also a non-original, but more interesting. Still, the show has a serious "let's not pay any attention to detail on the non-central elements" problem, and is not funny.

I think that Fred needs to take a more active role, being, no offense to any albanian-american hotties, the dormant talent here.

Madeline bothers me as being a character completely abducted from LFN, in an unchanged manner. Other than that, there are lots of people walking about that don't have a major role. Or purpose to being there.

Watch the second ep. anyway.

I recognized the style.

But there's the other big problem: A week later, I don't remember who Madeline and Fred were. Really. Not a clue. Is Fred the FBI guy? The Dollhouse security guy with a vestigial conscience? The creepy blond guy? Or is Fred female, as in Angel? And who's Madeline? (No, don't answer, I could always look it up -- the problem is that I should remember these things, if the first episode was doing its job. I defy anyone to watch Ep 1 of Buffy and not know who Xander, Willow, Giles, and Cordelia are a week later. Ep 1 of this show was just Eliza Dushku walking around in a bunch of random scenes with a bunch of random people in the backround.)
