Fic: Just Soft Enough

“Hey!” he stopped a few feet away.

Cameron looked up and her eyes widened. She seductively trailed a path from his polished shoes to his clean-shaven face. House got ready for a complement….

“Are you about to ask me to prom?”

…which never came.

She returned her attention to the file and headed towards Curtain Two. House followed her, which was much easier and faster in his new cane-less condition.

“So, how do I look?”

“You look fine.”

Cameron pressed a stethoscope to a woman’s chest and urged her to breathe.

“Fine?”

“Yes,” she responded, writing something down. “Good, now I need to take your pressure,” she told the patient who was alarmingly quiet.

“What if I go back to my previous rock star look? How about then?”

“You’d look fine then too,” Cameron continued tending to the elderly woman. She was now examining her pancreas and liver.

“Wilson and Cuddy seem to think this the better version, that I should embrace the normalcy…”

“Does it hurt?”

“Well it’s a predictable reaction, it’s just…”

Cameron turned around to address him.

“House, I was talking to the patient,” her hands were on the woman’s stomach, which House only then noticed.

“Oh, okay. I’ll just wait out there,” he pointed towards the main desk and left Cameron to her doctoring.

Five minutes later she slid the curtain open and stepped out.

“I’ll send someone to get your blood, Mrs. Shumacher.”

She walked over to the station and gave the file to a nurse.

“I need CBC and blood cultures drawn from her.”

Cameron then leaned back on the counter, relaxed one leg in front of the other and folded arms in the front. Meanwhile House scooted closer to her.

“I get it. You don’t care.”

“Oh I care. You knew that, you still know that. It doesn’t make a difference. You will do what you want.”

“Oh yeah and you wouldn’t try to stop me now. I forgot.”

“Yep, exactly.”

They stood like this for a minute. Their sleeves touching, they faced the chaos of women, men and children taking their roles in the theatre, which was ER in that moment, right then.

“Still, I just need a tie breaker here. It’s two for two right now.”

Cameron smiled. House was heavy enough to weigh for two.

“Listen, when it comes to you I am biased…”

“Still?”

“Still,” Cameron paused smiling. “You could grow a huge beard, bushy eyebrows and walk around in a Renaissance costume all day, you’d still be fine to me…”she continued staring into the crowd “…more than fine actually.”

She looked up at him and smiled.

“So, see, I am not the right person to ask about this.”

“Alright, I’ll be on a look out for bright green tights.”

Cameron headed back to work her ponytail swaying as she walked.

Little did she know, she was exactly the right person to ask.

As the elevator door closed, House took off the blue tie that itched him. The bit of skin above his collarbone and a foolish grin on his face indicated the return of super fine House the grouch.
