Telling it like it is

Dan O'Neill reports today that

Athletics director Dan Guerrero recently identified two important factors that led to UCLA becoming the first school to win 100 NCAA championships. Guerrero broke it down for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution this way:

1. "John Wooden went west, young man." 2. "We were the first school to win 99."

He also notes that Sandy Koufax has been drafted -- by Israel!

The Modi'in Miracle of the Israel Baseball League took Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, 71, with the final selection of the league draft.

Manager Art Shamsky, a University City High grad, explained to reporters: "It's been 41 years between starts for him. If he's rested and ready to take the mound again, we want him on our team." Ken Holtzman, another U. City High product, also is a manager in the six-team league.
